"you ain't ever met no Martin Luther the King" "I DID MEET MARTIN LUTHER THE KING I was walking down the street in Memphis and somebody hit me in the chest and I said, "Martin Luther King why'd you hit me, and he said sorry, I thought you was somebody else"
as nagin appologized he talked about his conversation this morning with malcom x, richard pryor, and tupac.....
Depending on who gets back into the New Orleans for the vote its very possible that someone even more outspoken on racial issues will be elected. The reason why Nagin has made statements like that is previously many of the poorer African-American residents felt Nagin wasn't doing enough to address their issues.
Sishir, that shouldn't have been the way to address the issues, though I hear what you are saying. I heard he wants an ALL CHOCOLATE baseball team. Seriously, though. What the heck were his "uptown" comments? I don't know what Downtown, Uptown, Sidetown, or Sidewaystown he's talking about, but is he saying all this stuff about only some people are the hardest-working people? What about all my brown brothers rebuilding the city? Certainly I don't see that mentioned anywhere.
Wait a second.. hold on ... From an Asian point of view.. I don’t think the mayor in Houston is doing enough for Asian immigrants. We're mistreated I think we should go ahead and make this a Yellow City.. Because god wants it that way.. We need to make it a yellow city.. From a White's point of view... There are too many immigrants in Houston. They are taking all the jobs and crime has shot up cause of our new Katrina neighbors. I think we need to clean up this town and make if Vanilla.. Yeah you know what I’m saying. God is angry at us and we need to start to make this a vanilla city. Now tell me is any of that Racist? I don't care whats happened to you or your city. But you don't make public statements like that if your a Mayor. They should kick him out of his position right now.
Here is the video of Nagin's speech. http://www.wwltv.com/sharedcontent/VideoPlayer/videoPlayer.php?vidId=46812&catId=53
I'm not saying its right I'm explaining why he would make a statement like that and for those who think that the voters of NO should kick him out for making racist statements should understand that many voters in NO want their mayor to make statements like that. My own read on Nagin is that he himself probably doesn't believe what he's saying but is saying stuff like that considering how much heat has gotten in the past and also in light of the most recent NOLA recovery plan that has been heavily criticized by residents and others for possibly doing away with many of the African American neighborhoods. His statement about NO being a "Chocalate City" IMO is a direct response to critics accusing him of possibly whitewashing the city with a plan that could gut mostly African American neighborhoods.
On The Daily Show last night they had a clip of him trying to explain it away by saying something like, "Do you know how you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate and white milk, mix them together and get a tasty treat." Must. Dig. Hole. Deeper.
that speech was uncomfortable..... like a train wreck, you just cant look away. the "taint" report by ed helms had me in tears, though. especially the diagram.
What's wrong with 1 chocolate city in the entire USA? Don't we have many vanilla milk cities all over the place?

Black wants out of the streets Yellow wants the country Red wants the country back And white wants out of this world Sing - sing to the sky I want to ride the tiger I want to ride the tiger.
I dont understand where he gets away with just an apology. If a white mayor would say something to the affect of. God wants this city to be a white city, its his will blah blah blah. He would be kicked out of office, and be labeled a racist until he dies. What bothers me the most is the double standard that is there. Black people can talk talk talk, then when it comes to white people if they call someone black they are a racist. I feel this double standard not only stirs the racism of the true racist, but embraces all sterotypes and seperation we have today.
