"white and black coming together to make something special". I guess he don't want us browns and yellows and dark browns in there... *sob*...
I'm not trying to be a bad teammate *grin* Rocket River . . . I have little for Mr Nagin about now. I'm no sure what he trying to accomplish. I know what he is voicing. . . ergo the explaination. . . but I think he is perhaps misrepresenting his city and his people . .. I dunno the man personally . . and cannot use a history like in David Dukes' case to put his comments in context. I err on the side of him simply chosing his words poorly . . .but in all honesty . . if he is a racist. . . then he deserves what he gets
you guys are reaching. the guy isn't the brightest bulb but I don't see why you would take offense to that. He could have chosen better words, but all he was saying is that New Orleans will return to its old self, part of that is that is a majority black city. I notice all you conservatives missed the part about how he talked about the black community in new orleans improving itself, something you guys are always harping on.
if san antonio was destroyed by an earthquake and the mayor came out afterwards and said this city will be Mexican city it was before the earthquake would you take offense to it? I wouldn't. Being majority Hispanic is part of was makes san antonio the city it is. its no different from new orleans. now if he said we don't want any other people here, yeah that would be racist.
The two times that I've been to NO, I recalled the city being ~75% black. Nagin could've used much better words, but he's just saying that the city's demo will return to what it was before. Yes, he's an idiot. He's like a small town politician who's not shy about who his constituency are and looking after their interest.
I agree I am beginning to think he just speaks before thinking I'm even more worried if this was a PREPARED Speak Also . . I think some folx look to jump on a person . .. no matter that they say and they base it on things that should not matter. . . Content of your Character. . not what letter by your name Rocket River
Little Palaces :Elvis Costello Little Palaces In Chocolate Town all the trains are painted brown On the silver paper of the wrapper There's a dapper little man And he wears a wax moustache That he twists with nicotine fingers As he drops his cigarette ash And someone comes and sweeps it up And then he doffs his cap And there's a rat in someone's bedroom And they're shutting someone's trap And they'll soon be pulling down the little palaces And the doors swing back and forward, from the past into the present And the bedside crucifixion turns from wood to phosphorescent. And they're moving problem families from the South up to the North, Mother's crying over some soft soap opera divorce, And you say you didn't do it, but you know you did of course, And they'll soon be pulling down the little palaces. It's like shouting in a matchbox, filled with plasterboard and hope, Like a picture of Prince William in the arms of John the Pope. There's a world of good intentions, and pity in their eyes, The sedated homes of England, are theirs to vandalize. So you knock the kids about a bit, because they've got your name, And you knock the kids about a bit, until they feel the same. And they feel like knocking down the little palaces. You're the twinkle in your daddy's eye, a name you spray and scribble, You made the girls all turn their heads, and in turn they made you miserable. To be the heir apparent, to the kingdom of the invisible. So you knock the kids about a bit, because they've got your name, And you knock the kids about a bit, until they feel the same. And they feel like knocking down the little palaces.
I come down from the misty mountain I got lost on the hershey highway Take my head refreshing fountain Take my eyes from what they've seen. Take my head and change my mind How could people get so unkind.
nagin is like steve francis with his public speaking the honesty is refreshing, be he should used the filter between brain and mouth more often.
I always saw New Orleans as more of an Oreo city, black on the outside with a white cream filling. All I can say about Nagin, cocaine is a hell of a drug.
That was one of the strangest speeches I have ever heard from a city official, let alone the mayor. That city is in need of a good leader to help them recover via the local government. I'm not too sure Nagin is their man. Seriously that guy is nuts.
I found this very disturbing. It sounds like he's been huffing from the Pat Robertson pipe. I don't see though why many of y'all are criticizing him for this. Isn't this pretty much the samething that Bill Cosby has been saying? As for New Orleans being a black city that is a fact and one of the big concerns I've heard in New Orleans was that many residents fear it won't be but will be turned into a gentrified mostly white historical piece like the French Quarter and the Garden District is. Mayor Nagin has been taking a lot of heat over this possibility because many residents feel that this is what he would like since his reputation had been pro-business and tourism.
nagin is not racist....he's just freakin' insane. that guy hasn't said one thing that a "leader" like a mayor of an extremely large city would say in a time like this. i just want to know how in the hell that guy got elected into office?
I don't think you know this guy very well. I was watching him pre-Katrina, and you can believe he's as corrupt as they come. Nagin is a disgrace. Evan
In other news, the mayor of Boston has issued a decree that it will be rebuilt into its all Caucasian glory.

Nagin said that his intention was to comfort African-American residents, especially those feeling unwanted during the rebuilding process, but he said in doing so he inadvertently offended others. “I apologize to any resident in this city that may have been offended,” he said. “That was not my intention. If I could take anything back, I thought the Uptown comment was inappropriate. If any people are working hard to rebuild this city, it’s the people Uptown.” In his speech, Nagin had said that despite what some Uptown might be saying, that New Orleans would again be a majority African-American city. Nagin also apologized for invoking God in his speech, saying that it was inappropriate. Nagin’s speech included a statement that God wanted New Orleans to be majority African-American. “Unfortunately, everything I say today is scrutinized to the nth degree,” he said. “It was Martin Luther King’s birthday. I thought it was appropriate to address some of the concerns and frustrations I’m hearing from the African-American community.”
