This is exactly what Hakeem said and did. He always blocked to a teammate more often than not. Ming is still swatting at rebounds. I still haven't figured this out about Ming. He's behind the guy the rebound is coming down and he just swats at it and it goes out of bounds. First you're putting yourself in a position to get a foul called on you and secondly, you're just knocking the ball out of bounds.
Ming was doing that a lot earlier on. But he has being steadily improving on his defensive rebound. Last night game I don't remember seeing him swat/tip the ball. He is grabbing ball with both hands now, being taller than everybody else.
i'm glad yao doesn't have "long" arms. if he did, he'd definitely be another shawn bradley. when you're arms are as long as brandley's it's harder to control the ball and thus have any continuity in your ball handling.
"Originally posted by DavidS His wing-span is 7'4". " According to Houston Rockets strength and conditioning coach Anthony Falsone. Yao Ming has a swingspan of 90 inches. ( 7'6'') Falsone said the one surprising measurement was Yao's 7% body fat. Most NBA big men, Falsone pointed out, are in the 10%-15% range. "He's on the lean side, but he's not dieting to do it, so I'm not concerned," Falsone said. The tale of the tape: • Height, shoes off: 7-5 • Weight: 296 pounds • Wingspan, fingertip-to-fingertip: 90 inches • Standing upward reach, flat-footed: 9-7 • Body fat: 7% • Shoe size: 18 • Neck: 16 inches • Chest: 42 inches • Waist: 36 inches • Hips: 46 inches • Right thigh: 26 inches • Left thigh: 26 inches • Right calf: 18 inches • Left calf: 19 inches • Right biceps: 12 inches • Left biceps: 12 inches • Forearms: 12 inches — By Tom Weir http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/rockets/2002-10-29-yao-chatter_x.htm
Yes, I'm familiar with that article. But most of the other tape measurements from pre-draft measure his wing-span at 7'4" 1/2(89.5). Thus, that would explain USA Today getting a rounded measurement. By the way, 90 inches is equal to 7'5", not 7'6". If Falson measured 89.5 inches, he would have just said 90 inches (rounded up) to USATOAY. You know how some reporters eyes would glaze over if you get too detailed.
Yao has a relatively small wingspan because his shoulder is narrow. his arms are not as short as they look.
Davids This is a common mistake for inches to feet conversion. 90'' = 7'6'' Why? 12 inches = 1 foot .5 of a foot is 6 inches 90''/12'' = 7.5' (7 feet and 1/2 of a foot ) therefore 7.5 feet = 7 feet and 6 inches Anyway even if Yao has 89'' wingspan. His arms are still perfectly normal, not too long not too short. An average wingspan of a person is about the same as his/her height. I don't think Yao has short arms at all.
I remember there was a thread around draft time which listed out the wingspans of every potential draft picks. I think Ming was ranked second just behind Melvin Ely. But keep in mind his shoulders are at least 5 inches higher than anyone else. So he probably has the highest upward reach.
tell that to dajuan wagner. he's 6'1 with a 6'7" wingspan and can score like a millionaire at a brothel!
The reason Yao will never be as dominated as the Dream on the defense is the athletic ability. Those are from god, you cannot get it by practice. Only Wilt, maybe Russell, can be mentioned in the same sentence interms of their physical ability. I know Yao's height makes him an defensive intimidator, he will become a better defensive player as he learns the better timing, better posioning. But I just don't see he can be any where close to Hakeem's defensive dominace. Bradely had the similar defensive presence as Yao when he entered league, and he is a better shot bloker. He still poses the same intimidation in the middle, but no one in the league consider him a good defensive player.
Zboy....Hakeem is 4th all time in Steals. Ruyun needs a real education on How Hakeem played in his prime
What? Why are you comparing Ming to Bradley? Aren't we way-beyond that at this point? Obviously I have to assume you didn't watch the Rockets Dallas game. Last time Ming played against Bradley, Ming TOTALLY DOMINATED him. 30 points vs 0 points.
Yes. My bad math got the best of me. If you want to look at someone with long arms, take a look a the Jazz's Andrei Kirilenko. His arms aren't longer that Nene's. But, in relation to his body, they ARE longer in ratio! His arms are freaky long!
It's the offensive end where he is getting himself in trouble. He goes over the back of the defensive player. Against Philly, he got 2 fouls that way, and it could have easily been 4.
