like, seriously. I feel tempted to pull a Rush Limbaugh (on McNabb, which was wrong by the way lol) and say that he's overrated because he's not the same color as your typical rapper. But holy crap, I don't understand the infatuation with this guy. made some great tracks, extremely funny and goofy ones (probably the most creative rapper out there), but in terms of lyrics, delivery, content, voice, everything, he's not even above average. When you compare him to Lil Wayne or Soulja Boy, he's Shakespearean. But try listening to Guru/GZA/Pac/any of the truly great rappers, and he's not even close, but yet he's consistently ranked in the top 5 of all time. but anyway sorry for the rant . I actually like this song, but it's nowhere near a "classic" as the OP said.
not above average in terms of lyrics, delivery, content, voice?!? are you serious?! did you even listen to this track?? Yeah, I got ahead of myself, not a classic but Eminems verse is straight up fire. His flow is perfect, great metaphors, lyrics. The problem with Eminem, is that hes not consistent so therefore people like you think hes not that great, bc most the time the public gets to listen to his poppy songs, but when he decides to make serious tracks, like this one, noone in the game is better.
Lol. I'm struggling with my opinion here... should I believe PointForward and Ari are right or should I believe maybe that, oh I don't know... Rakim has a point? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DLfZI-5hxFk&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DLfZI-5hxFk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

How many black rappers are better than Eminem? Answer: RAKIM 2pac Biggie Smallz Guru GZA Ice Cube Scarface Mos def Mobb deep BT&H various rappers affiliated with AOTP and JMT (killah priest, planetary, celph, Vinnie Paz (white dude) etc etc) and the more contemporary ones: Jay Z Game Nas Chamillionaire that's what? a dozen off the top of my head? Rakim is a classy dude, he's not going to say "hey Eminem sucks a$$". He probably legitimately likes him. To each his own I guess, but still doesn't change the fact that Eminem doesn't measure up to the greats lyrically nor delivery-wise. He's by far the most creative, I'll give you that. And until this day, "sing for the moment" remains as one of my all time favorite songs. But that's just one song off of his best album ever, and unfortunately he hasn't been able to replicate that success. After 8 mile he ditched what he was really good at and switched over the goofy crap making weird noises and sounding like a total mental patient.
LOL to you even mentioning chamillionare and game (50 cent used to write for this clown) being better than eminem, you lost all credibility. jay z steals line from everybody to make songs, so no. Nas, had two classics, and thats it. Ill say that in the past there were better emcees than em, but bc of relapse not living up to the hype, its debatable right now who's on top.
Eminem's def a good/great rapper. This song just doesnt help prove that point. This song was actually pretty terrible. The second half of Em's verse sounded very generic, I could picture a number of random southern rappers siptting those lines. And the singing before his veres started was whack too. (I hate sounding like a hater).
I think Eminem is a very good and creative producer and writer, but I also think the guy's voice and delivery sounds EXACTLY like a White kid trying to rap, and you see a bunch of those youtube. He does not sound like a 'natural' rapper. A guy who is also White but DOES sound like a real rapper is Paul Wall. I think his music sucks, but he sounds like a real rapper with his voice and delivery. Eminem sounds like the Backstreet Boys trying to do rap. To me, voice and delivery is a huge part of rap music. Eminem has the lyrics and creativity part down, but then again that is exactly why he is a much better producer than rapper. I really do think the main infatuation with him and the largest part of his success is that he is a White rapper. It has served him great, and Dre saw it early on and he cashed in on it. Jay-Z is another guy who is hugely popular but I am not entirely fond of. I just cant stand his voice and his delivery, it completely ruins his songs for me, although he is lyrically strong and is also a great producer. Especially with rappers, voice and delivery counts for a whole lot. Eminem sounds r****ded. His work is best when he sticks to producing, because he clearly has a gift for writing with that disturbed mind of his.
You really shouldn't just be judging Eminem on his mainstream songs either. He tore it up on the underground, had some pretty crazy rap battles, and if you were just talking about his mainstream songs, then I would agree with you. But, he definitely deserves to be in, at the very least, top 10 best rappers of all time (imo, top 5).
I for one love Eminem, was disappointed in his lil accents he does on his new album though. This song sounds catchy kinda, chorus felt flat... I really don't like rap except for a few upbeat type songs you hear in a club and its just fun to listen to even though the lyrics are garbage and talk about the same crap everyone seems to rhyme about. But, i guess that's hip hop? I wouldn't know the difference between hip hop and rap. Is it the same? To me hip hop= 2pac, Big, Emenim, Jay Z, Kanye West, Lil wayne, Rakim, Nas, Snoop, etc To me rap= more gangster type stuff, which i don't know many artists i like besides Bone Thugs N Harmony(early stuff) and Immortal Technique. Is that wrong?
I tend to agree with everyone else- em part was good but the rest of the song as terrible. 'Drop it on your ****in head' made me think of this: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/t_HvzLioOgU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/t_HvzLioOgU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I'm confused because if you don't like Jay-Z (most "hardcore rap fans" don't) and think Eminem is overrated, then who do you listen to? I'm going to guess it would be: "Pac, Biggie, Talib Kweli, and Wu Tang" because that's pretty much all everyone ever want to say they listen to when it comes to rap music on this board. This isn't a personal attack, I'm just curious to know.
It's because Jay-Z changed after the Black Album (going into his retirement)... He became too "30 is the new 20, I have more passport stamps than you". That's why most people on this board don't like him. This board is too picky sometimes, when it comes too Hip Hop now a days.
I can understand that but what I don't get is, when you listen to rap/hiphop, what are you trying to get out of it? People cite Tupac and Biggie as being the best lyricists ever but is that because they were the pioneers (in terms of production/lyrics/delivery)? Because of the whole "man, they were good when they were alive and I didn't appreciate them enough so I'm going to canonized their music beause they're dead"? Because they really, REALLY want to relive that gangster rap era? I don't disagree that most rap/hiphop these days tend to have little effort in them by the artists/producers but to say "Eminem's overrated, Jay-Z gone pop, Kanye sucks." without citing any rappers/hip hop artists that have been as successful commercially as these two are/were is a bit fishy.
it's laughable that you bring up 50 cent ALLEGEDLY writing for Jayceon. This is one main thing that started the feud. Do you honestly think Curtis Snitch Jackson could write those verses? Consider all of the weak lyrics and weaker delivery that 50 has given out the last 5 years. Get outta here. The Game is a true lyricist with an awesome delivery. Is he better than Eminem? Not yet. And to even say Nas only had 2 classics is ridiculous. Is that because his albums weren't mainstream and pimped all over MTV and BET? Lyrically, there isn't a current rapper who can mess with Nas, including Em.
I actually have 2 completely separate reasons for listening to rap/hip hop, and these two reasons are strictly reliant on my mood or what I'm trying to do. I separate rap into 2 entities: "feel Friggin badass" rap, and then there is Art. for the times when I'm working out for example, or just feeling pumped up driving around, or just in an enthusiastic mood, I listen to rap with the main focus being the beat, and the overall song. "Empire state of mind" comes to mind, it's freaking ridiculous for a rap song, but it's so damn catchy that I don't mind listening to it. Kanye and DJ Khaled's "go hard" is basically the same. "first I stand around a vomit, then I $H!t up on it, F the beat up so bad won't nobody sit up on it". I mean, what the hell does that even mean? but I love it, for the purpose of just releasing my energy, that's my kind of thing. What's funny is that most biggie songs that I listen to fall in this category, like "big poppa", ya know, "to all the ladies in the place with style and grace, allow me to lace these lyrical douches in your bushes", that kinda stuff. Now "Art" is strictly lyrics, content, and delivery. But especially CONTENT. I listen to "Art" whenever I just feel like appreciating the awesomeness of poetry that some of my great rappers produce. Yes, it is poetry. Tupac's "changes" is poetry, it's not talking about moist vags and popping dimes in the club, it's talking about racism, poverty, social issues that we face today. But speaking of lyricists, I don't think Pac or Biggie are the best lyricists of all time. They're up there, definitely. But Biggie ruins his lyrics with his B.S content (sex drugs etc...) with the exception of "running to live" where it starts "check it, I grew up a F&&&in screw up". Pac on the other hand had amazing content, talked about crap that matters, told stories, but his vocab, while great, doesn't rival some of who I consider the all time greats. My personal favorite is Guru from gangstarr. He never gets the credit he deserves, mainly because he self-proclaimed himself as "the king of monotone", which in my opinion is what makes him great. He doesn't change his voice, make goofy sounds, or alter his speech to make stuff rhyme, he just RHYMES, beautiful flow, vocab of a freaking professor, metaphors that just make you shake your head with disbelief. A lot of people probably won't like him due to his monotonous rap, but that's my personal preference and I think he's the greatest rapper of all time. "but anyway it's just another day another fake jack i slay with my spectac rap display, styles smooth but rugged, you can't push or shove it you dig it and you dug it cuz like money you love it the king of monotone, with my own throne righteously violent-prone my words bring winds like cyclones" For you scarface fans, there's a great song Guru did with scarface, called "betrayal". I highly recommend it, one of my favorite tracks of all time. my words bring
true that, and I believe he is better than Eminem. Game is unbelievably skilled, and it saddened me that him and Dr. Dre (one of my heroes) had conflict because Dre beats and Game rhymes would be money. A song to really get a sense of Game's ability is "my life". granted, Wayne ruins it with the gay baby sounding hook, but Game's verses were awesome.
Amazon accidentally shipped Lil Wayne's Rebirth Album early and ofcourse it is online everywhere now. It is absolutely terrible. Very hard to listen to.
Lil Wayne's Rebirth Accidentally Shipped To 500 Amazon Customers Much-delayed album was not supposed to be released until February 1. By Gil Kaufman About 500 Lil Wayne fans got a pleasant surprise this week when the rapper's frequently delayed new album, Rebirth, showed up in their mailboxes. According to Billboard magazine, Amazon.com shipped out several hundred copies of the album this week to fans who had preordered it. Unnamed sources and an e-mail to the magazine from an Amazon customer uncovered the unprecedented snafu. Cash Money boss Bryan "Baby" Williams recently tweeted that Rebirth had been pushed back from December 21 to February 1 — a week before Wayne is scheduled to be sentenced and begin his one-year prison term on a gun charge. But the disc reportedly began showing up in mailboxes on December 14. Spokespeople for Amazon and Wayne's label, Universal Motown, could not be reached for comment at press time. Quoting unnamed sources, Billboard reported that following the sixth release-date change for Rebirth last month, Universal Motown recalled the estimated 1 million units that had already been manufactured, one-third of which had been shipped to retailers. Though Amazon got a notice to return its copies of the disc, around 500 were reportedly sent to customers. A number of tracks from the disc have been leaked or released as singles, including "Prom Queen," "On Fire" and the latest, the Eminem collaboration "Drop the World," which hit the Net on Tuesday. Other new tracks that have surfaced include "Hot Revolver," "Fix My Hat" and "Da Da Da." Due to the slow digital sales of some of those songs, Cash Money and Universal reportedly believed the album hadn't gotten the proper set-up and decided to delay the release once again, falling into a similar pattern to Wayne's previous album, Tha Carter III. Not surprisingly, anonymous sources told Billboard that Wayne may tinker with the track listing for the album given the latest leak, meaning the Amazon customers who received their copies could have a collector's item on their hands. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1628340/20091216/lil_wayne.jhtml
