If I ever get to meet you, I'll tell you the true story of how GnR got signed to Geffen Records in the first place. Hint: It has nothing to do with their music.....
ooohh - please do tell! if you live in austin that would definately be worth a couple beers, but if not how about just telling us here? did you ever see janes addiction around? or perry's previous band psi-com? that would be another great (great imo) l.a. band that burned out rather quickly.
IMO,No! What about the Replacements,REM,Pixies,Melvins,Gang of Four,Sonic Youth,RHCP or Jane's Addiction and thousands of other lesser known bands. These bands and others like had a greater influence on grunge and were the bridge from late 70's early 80's punk to the early 90's grunge/alternative explosion and they rocked as hard or harder than any hair/glam/sunset strip/live fast and die hard/leather clothes must be worn band. And another thing,if there was one band the Pistols ripped off IMO, then it was definitely the New York Dolls. They've even said so much. And finally someting jo mama and I can agree on - The Clash. They were the best. That still doesn't take anything away from the importance of the Pistols. I remember seeing an interview with Robbie Robertson and he was talking about the first time he Elvis. He said to the effect that all that mattered to him was Rock and Roll after that. Not school, not friends, nothing but Rock and Roll. I believe it was the same for many bands after seeing the Pistols even though they would probably hate the comparison. I still don't understand how a band like GnR could be so big and Alice and Chains not be (or at least not as big as GnR). They were by far a million miles better than huns and hosers in almost every respect. It's not even close. That's one of the biggest problems with the music industry and it's been going on since the beginning. The best are never given their props(or not enough),while more accessible and mediocre are given everything.
I live in Houston. I would not want to post the story here. I've already pissed off enough GnR fans in this thread. But it would definitely be worth your while, and you will need at least a couple of beers to get over it. PM me next time you will be in town. I met Perry Farrell one time. It was in 1994, in a VIP area of a club right after my band had finished playing. All I can tell you about Perry is that he shakes hands like a little wussygirl.
