In a society that is built to say...I wanna get mine, this guy knows he is still the best QB in the game, and still wants to do the best for the team by giving them cap space...instead of playing for atleast 20 mil per year...this guy is giving his Pats a home town discount and only gonna play for 9 mil...fairly remarkable... http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...brady-new-england-patriots-agree-to-extension While the rest of the league was concentrating on the NFL Scouting Combine, the New England Patriots were busy locking up their future Hall of Fame quarterback to a "contract for life." SI.com's Peter King broke the news Monday that the Patriots have agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep Tom Brady under contract through the 2017 season, when he'll be 40. What's noteworthy about Brady's new contract is that he stands to collect just $27 million over the three years, which essentially is half of his market value. It's the second time in Brady's career that he has left a stack of money on the bargaining table in order to give the Patriots a competitive advantage. Consider it just another perk of enjoying a supermodel for a spouse. We shouldn't bend over backwards to turn Brady into a good samaritan, however. The extension -- which is guaranteed, a source told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport -- gives Brady the security of at least $41 million that won't be ripped up by the Patriots at a later date. As NFL.com's Albert Breer points out, the Patriots build their organization with two-year windows in mind. A Patriots source told Breer that the Brady extension creates "well over" $30 million in salary-cap space over the next two years and $20 million for 2013 alone. The logical implication is that the 2013 cap savings will be used toward a new contract for free agent -- and Brady friend -- Wes Welker. Or the Patriots could let Welker walk and devote some of those funds toward a player such as wide receiver Mike Wallace. Monday's news means the Patriots will be players in free agency.
Props to Tom Brady, who has always had my respect. Pats are lucky to have a guy like him. At the same time, the Pats are my least favorite team in the NFL because of Belichick.
Brady is still the best QB in the league, with Aaron Rodgers a close 2nd, and PManning 3rd. Brady is impact for the pats is just as important as Lebron's for his team... Everyone ripped on Lebron b/c he was a total Dbag for the way he went about doing everything. Totally selling out his city, and totally embarrassing a community that supported him from day one...That was bad...no one cared that he switched teams, its the way he did it that was a total farce. Ask Kobe to change his 30 mil contract for next season and I bet you already know the answer...
Can we leave LeBron out of this? My goodness! Let's keep it on topic (football), especially when the situations aren't even the same as has been pointed out.
The guy is a competitor that will do anything to win. He obviously gets it, in that to win, he can still take slightly less but still be exceptionally paid. Of course, having a wife that makes 50 million a year doesn't hurt either.
Tom Brady's new five-year contract is worth $57 million with $33 million fully guaranteed. Brady will receive $30 million in signing bonus payments over the first three seasons. His base salaries in 2013 and 2014 are now $1 million and $2 million, respectively. The contract is essentially fully guaranteed through 2015, as in 2016 the money Brady is owed becomes guaranteed for injury only. It's possible that the Patriots could approach Brady about another restructure after that point. For now, they have the future Hall of Famer under control through 2017 at an incredibly team- and cap-friendly rate.
This isn't slightly less it is like 8million/year dollars less. NFL owners are genius. They make gigantic profits yet convince the players to take one for the team, but if you start to slip we will cut you in less than a second.
The players that take one for the team are the ones that don't get cut when they slip. Tom Brady's not getting cut if he sucks next year.
http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/8990773/tom-brady-guarantees-nearly-doubled-deal-source He didn't take a paycut. He had two years and $30 million left on his deal and this new contract gives him a $30 million signing bonus. He didn't leave a dollar on the table.
Exactly. This isn't just "some player" it's tom freaking brady and he isn't going to get cut if he magically has a bad season.
