I think in this whole argument I have not heard one of the primary effects of nuclear technology on the military mentioned. Sure, nuclear technology gave rise to big bombs that go boom, but the other revolution they brought about may be just as scary for the U.S. planners. Particularly since the US has shut down SOSUS, the underwater listening network that could hear a crab fart from another continent, the development of nuclear technologies that allow a submarine to stay submerged for essentially as long as it has food would have to scare the Pentagon people. One of the key points about the Shabab 3 missile is that it could potentially hit Europe. With Nuclear submarine technology Iran could cruse up to Puget Sound and drop short range missiles on New York and DC. Not saying this is a legitimate concern, or one that they have any right to be concerned about or whatever, just that I think they have to be thinking about it while the discussions seem to ignore it.
