i don't think people are freaking out or losing perspective, why shouldn't people debate the plans for public works? i also agree that any park is better than no park. hopefully it'll be one more reason for peeps to move downtown. my neighborhood in brooklyn, park slope, is one of the most desirable places to live in NYC, especially if you have children, because of prospect park. i mean we are talking about totally different scales here but the new park sounds like a fine step in the right direction.
Classic. Keept it simple ...but give me frisbee golf. I think frisbee golf just recently surpassed the javelin in recreational popularity. The only place I've seen people playing in Houston is on Rice Campus...aka nerdville.
And making the asumption that I wanted Zilker park in the middle of downtown is absurd. All I said I wanted was a scaled down park that had room for bands to play. Jesus...... Sorry I have an opinion.
So what about the folks who owned the ugly downtown parking lots that I'm sure they were making money on? Are they just SOL? I'm sure the city is gonna keep all the profits from the underground parking.
Does this mean the end for the Miller Outdoor Theater? http://www.milleroutdoortheatre.com...isplay&id=1&DirectoryUseAbsoluteOnSearch=True
It is true that we already have an outdoor ampitheater right down the rail line <3 miles away from the proposed park. But they don't do many "concerts" with bands. They'll have classical music, dance troups and even a broadway musical by TUTS but they don't ever really have jazz, rock, zydeco, blues, or whatever. But if Drewdog is so worried about live music, the focus should be on reinventing Miller Outdoor Theater rather than recreating what we already have. Miller is a great spot and they SHOULD feature more acts rather than just the artsy stuff.
I remember seeing Rock and Blues at the Miller Outdoor Theater in the 70's and 80's. SRV played there in the late 70's at the Juneteenth Festival. The city is just looking for a new "Toy". They should spend that money where it is needed. Not on another Park.
Its my thing man Im in a band, I love live music, and I absolutely love the outdoors even if it is a bazillion degrees outside. I just want to see more of it in Houston. Thats why I was hoping for more space and the ability to accomodate large bands/festivals and the like. I know Houston will never have the live music scene that Austin has, but at the very least we can have options other than CWMP (cool place but too far removed from the city), Verizon, and Toyota Center which all have their limitations.
shame that that map doesn't even show the best frisbee golf course in town - the one in the woodlands.
Out of curiosity, what are these people doing? Are they walking on water? Are they ice skating in outdoors Houston on what seems to be a nice day, with fountains spraying water onto the ice pond? And is that a guy on a unicycle on the left?
They are walking in the water. It's probably only a couple of inches deep. The picture above it is the before shot.
Ah, that makes sense. I figured there was some type of reasonable explanation, but I couldn't figure out what it was for some reason.
I love the idea... But there is something about a bunch of East Texas Rednecks in john boats using this pond as a fishin' hole that would paint a perfect picture of Texas... As far as the Transients using the pond to Bath... Well they already do it in cement pond at City Hall. Might as well let them use the interactive fountains as a shower too. I also think once they finish all of the Buffulo Bayou restoration it will make Houston on of the more "greener" cities in the Country. With Memorial, Hermann, Allen Parkway and the Buffulo Bayou, thats a lot of parks in less than a 5 mile radius.
