On 610am they were just talking about the CBA. They said that Padgett (Rockets players rep) said he thought there would be a lock out on July 1st. I hope they can get it together. Hockey is dead.
I just bought 4 season tickets to the Austin NBDL team, right on the 2nd row center court. I hope they work it out and the Rockets can send their young players to Austin....if not I just wasted some cash. DD
It looks decent. I'm not too sure about the MLE break-up thing, but I'm all for the minor league and age limit.
LOL! A buck seventeen for courtside basketball tickets? This is the NBDL, not the YMCA summer league...They better be charging $30 for beer if they're going to make any money.
$27 a ticket each game. In the Austin convention center. I am hoping the new CBA allows Houston players (like Badiane) etc to develop here in Austin. DD
Or we just might start seeing some of the more prominent Euro leagues getting some of our big names. Think about it, people are scouting Europe pretty heavily these days, the world is getting smaller, and you can go to college and major in a useless BS degree or go over seas and make couple hundred K (and some of the better Euro teams pay very well, not NBA, bot top players does get 7 figures). I think BBall is becoming a more international sport, and like soccer, the international sports gets international leagues, could be just a few years from now when we have to bid against Euro leagues for American players.
Well the only ones I could find right now http://www.dcexaminer.com/articles/2005/05/05/sports/maryland_sports/001_all_monroe.txt Monroe is provided a car, an apartment and one meal per day by his team, which is standard for most Americans or former top NCAA Division I players in Europe. His team, like most in Europe, practices for about two hours twice a day and normally plays one game a week. Monroe would not reveal his salary, but it is believed that Americans in Hungary can make between $50,000 to $100,000 per season, and that is tax-free. and http://www.sptimesrussia.com/archive/times/1057/rest/r_15286.htm According to ProSport, CSKA has put up about $5.5 million for its six highest-paid players, with last year's Euroleague MVP, American guard Marcus Brown, topping the list with a $1.5 million contract. So if you're an extrememly marketable 18 - 19 year old, and your faced with an option of signing a contract in Europe for a upto (if there are enough hype) a million dollars for couple of years, or go to a Division one school for 2 years. What would you do? Especially since these days, playing in Europe is by no means an admission of not good enough to play in the NBA. And if you're guys like Marcus Brown, you're faced with sitting on a bench fighting for a chance to play and earn 500k or playing in Europe for over a million and get the fame, not to mention European pootang, what would you do? As basketball gets more popular internationally, leagues in Europe will start to pay more, and NBA will have to compete for talent sooner or later. The establishment of an age limit just speeds up the process.
Go to college. I don't really buy the whole "they'll go to Europe" theory. Kids with the talent like you're talking about could make serious money in college as well, although not publically. There's a reason financially unstable college stars drive around in Escalades, etc. I don't think you're going to convince any young kid to go overseas for two years, when college would be more fun, closer to home, and you'd still have money.
So you're talking about Maurice Clarette type of situation? Well if NCAA can come out and say we are willing to pay kid, then I would be ok. But I seriously hate the system where the kid (look at Clarette) gets most of the blame and punishment if anything gets out. If there were high paying Euroleagues for football (NFL Europe don't count) I would say they should go there myself also.
some may go...but not many. Afterall...how many go now? The option is open, should they choose. And judging from their NBA bretheren, who complain about going to Canada...I can't imagine 18 year olds being anxious to play in Hungary.
Well, after listening to Stern during the Spurs/Sonics game, I think it's a pretty safe bet that there will be a lockout this summer. How the hell do you go from never having any labor disputes to two consecutive lockouts? What a bunch of morons...
I just don't see it yet...Some NBA guys are reluctant to play in Toronto, so I doubt there would be a huge influx of high school players waiting their two years out in the Euro leauges. Soccer's different, because the US is playing catchup to the established European leagues.
Did anyone see the interview w/ David Stern during the Seattle/SA game? He basically said there is not an agreement. He said that both sides can't agree on anything and even mentioned that a lockout is a possibility.
Players get totally screwed ESP considering the previous CBA Players do not seem to have won on ANYTHING Rocket River win win for NBA and NCAA . . but seems at the player's expense but hell . .if they like it i love it
