I have been on a strange kick. Lately my tastes have still been fairly indy, but way on the pop side of indy. I don't know why. Actually it might have started with Snow Patrol. Their CD is pretty good, and fun. It isn't a groundbreaking new thing, and is pretty easy to swallow. I've really enjoyed the Kings of Leon and that is less poppy, but still pretty poppy. One band I love recently is called Aqueduct. They are quirky, funny without trying to be real silly or cutesy it just comes natural and seems like that is who they are. Back to the incredibly pop side of Indy I have been listening to the Stereophonics and Brendon Benson. They are so poppy clean in their sound I sometimes feel embarrassed admitting that is what I'm listening to, but I think the songs are well crafted. I also have recently discovered a not-so-new band called the Pernice Brothers. Finally there is a band that is fairly local here in LA called Space Mountain thatI like a lot. They are pretty poppy too. I've never out and out rejected things that have a pop sound, but recently that seems like 90% of the new stuff I like is along those lines. Another band that has some "poppy" even dancy synth songs some of which are terrific called Of Montreal. Some of their stuff is too much for me, but some of it is grade A.
I've heard two songs by them, and I was up in the air. I liked both of the songs I heard, but I wondered how much of his bowiesque quality was forced and how much was just him, so I held off investigating them more. But everytime I hear their songs I enjoy them.
I saw Robert Plant at the Beacon Theater last night. His new stuff was GREAT!!!! I was totally shocked. His band was really tight and I had a blast. New bands....I recently bought Louis XIV's album and like it. Dirty and childish, but fun. They opened for the Killers and put on a good show.
I'm gonna start naming stuff before I forget, so I haven't gone through the whole thread.. Not especially new, but I'm in love with Minus the Bear. They have a new CD coming out in a bit which *ahem* has leaked already so hmm. Sam Prekop The Cloud Room Sufjan Stevens has some new stuff out. Of Montreal (not very new but shh) The Dears
FB, I figured you already had some stuff by Pulp. I don't really think that Jarvis Cocker is forcing himself to sound like Bowie; it seems natural to me. But yea, I think you would really really like "Different Class". Buy it for me as it is so good it is worth buying twice.
I explored the following new bands which I think are defintely worth a listening: Magnolia Electric Company - what comes after the blues: the album from the songshia singer. Beautiful stuff. Spoon - Gimme Fiction: new record from this outstanding band Caribou - the milk of human kindness: ex Manitoba people with an album that is hard to explain what music it is. Very fresh stuff, a mix of kraut-grooves, psychedelic electronica, folky freakout stuff..........puuuhhhh Weird War - Illuminated by the light: new album from ex Make-up members. Very back taken, postpunk diamonds. Jamie Lidell - multiply: new record from this warp artist. Could be the new prince (anno 1999 album). Great funk record with some new twists. A bomb live!!! Aphex Twin - Analord Series 1-11: vinyl only series of 11x 12" records. WOW!!!! the Herbaliser - take london: new album, his best so far in my opinion. Beats, Ennio Moriccone, great new rappers, Jean Grae!!!! excellent album M83 - Before the dawn heals us: shoegaze as its best. My bloody Valentine meets Air. the Tears - here come the tears: debut from found back together ex-Suede founders. Butler and Anderson. Wonderfull loveanthems. Great, Great, Great. The best Suede record ever? Thats some of the new stuff I bought. All hits.
ahhh and I forgot the following gems: Ben Lee - Awake is the new sleep: please listen to this. It is amazing. radio dept. - lesser matters: Scandinavian, low-fi, beauties, heartbreaking great songs. emotional songs. great production. why? - sanddollars ep: the ep from Anticon mastermind why. A mix of his old stuff, beck, and folky songwriter stuff mixed with state of the art new songwriting attitude. amazing.
i'm sure no one here likes this type of music, but Old Crow Medicine Show is a great new band. they're a bluegrass/traditional group - no percussions. check out their cover of "Wagon Wheel" by bob dylan.... fantastic song. same with "big time in the jungle."
Spoon is an awesome band - I have been meaning to pick up more stuff by them. Glad to see that Aphex Twin got mentioned here, as well. One of my all-time favorite solo acts. Palm - is that CD you mentioned by Aphex Twin, one that has been released or is it still awhile before it is going to be released or even a bootleg?
Manny, the Aphex is a special release, vinyl only series, it is eleven 12" records that come with a folder at then end of the series. http://www.rephlex.com/analord.html
Here's a list of bands and a suggested song from each: Dredg - "Ode To The Sun" The Killers - "On Top" Mae - "All Deliberate Speed" or "Summertime" (If you're in a healthy relationship or are in love you'll probably really like this group but if you've just broken up with your girlfriend, you're probably in the mood for something else...something that makes you want to murder people) The Postal Service - "Nothing Better"
Snow Patrol isn't good live? That's disappointing to hear... Bloc Party is good and like another poster said, The Killers and Postal Service are also both good bands.
Ambulance LTD Really cool band from NY. Mannny - I think you would totally dig this band. Good vibe.... Can't really put a finger on who they sound like. Maybe a little like Spoon/Coldplay, but just a good sound. Check out their record. You wont be disappointed. I saw them live a few months ago at the Meridian and they were awesome.
