i got into can the same way. love me some can. maybe they should be sending a cut of their royalties to the lab. architecture in helsinki - 8 piece australian orchestrated pop. like polyphonic spree, stereolab, the brady bunch and belle and sebastian all mixed together. they just came thru texas this week so if you missed them 2 bad 4 u. i saw snow patrol at south by southwest a couple years ago and i thought they were boring as hell, and im even into that kind of music. i just rediscovered billy joel in the last couple months. all of his 70's stuff is great and ive been listening daily - the stranger/piano man/52nd street. brian eno's new album is cool - kind of a return to "pop" after years of doing ambient music. ive never been a white strips fan, but the new album has made me a convert. it sounds like the stones beggars banquet to me. amazingly, there is barely any electric guitar on the album. isis - boston based metal group - they are on mike patton's label. i would describe them as shoegazer metal. heavy, yet atmospheric and melodic. mono - the japanese mogwai - go from these beautiful quiet passages to blisteringly loud. i like them better than mogwai live - very intense.
SECT OF FATE A great sounding band based there in Houston. The sound is like a HEAVIER Linkcoln park without the rap. They are on tour with Seether. Their album should be out around August. Look for it! They are also a great bunch of guys.
Because he's the only cool person around here who knows what music to listen to without having a magazine tell him.
not so fast, my friend... gorch fock pong les savy fav amon tobin erase eratta dungen lcd soundsystem the faint trans am chicks on speed crack: we are rock c'mon, MEOWGI, surely you can't be as jaded about new music as i am? get out there and experiment. you might be surprised...
It's not just new music. Something happened. I just don't care that much anymore. It's weird. Yesterday I put in Funkadelic "Lets' Take it to the Stage" in my truck, and I wasn't really getting into it. I was skipping through most of the songs. After a while I just let the cd play and I finally started really getting into it the second time it started playing. It was a like a different record from the first time through. I used to just eat it up off the bat. This has been happening a bunch. I guess I'm just getting old. I need music viagra.
I'm admittidly pretty stubborn when it comes to getting turned on to 'new' music. I have my bands that I love and as far as the rest of them, pfffft. Probably not a real good attitude to have, I know. Granted, I have a LOT of bands that I love but very few of them are 'new'. Hell, most of them aren't even together anymore. If they are, they're not as good as they used to be. Too many examples of that to list. I kind of feel the same way as meowgi. Lately, everything new I hear it's as if I've heard it before. There's really not a lot of music out there that's original anymore. Probably the last band I 'discovered' was Explosions in the Sky.
Not all of these are new, but aren't very "radio" popular Action Action (think The Killers) And you will know us by the Trail of Dead (Kinda feels like your listening to a play, well orchistrated) Dogs Die in Hot Cars (think talking heads or XTC) Death from Above 1979 Kevin Divine (Singer Songwriter, reminds me of Elliot Smith but happy) The Fire Theft (Singer from Sunday Day Real estate) The Good Life (Great Great band, Singer songwriter) Her Space Holiday (Think Postal Service but more cynical) Kind of Like Spitting (Emo folkish) Mates Of State (Probably the most energetic music ever) Minus The Bear (Great experimental New wave band) The New Amsterdams (Singer from The Get Up kids, Churns out pop songs like a machine) Pinback (Sounds like a mix of 311 and Sublime at times) Sprites (Will remind you of The Shins) Sparta (Great Great Great Punk/emo music) The Unicorns (Quirky new wave) Basically if your interested in emo, Folk, punk, or the new wave come back; you'll like a lot of the bands listed.
This might not be too new...well its new to me. Devil Driver - Pretty awsome Death/Power metal band The singer is the old member of Coal Chamber I think. They have a new cd coming out on Tuesday. Check out the song called "Hold Back The Day"
I was feeling that way a little until I got out and started seeing bands and playing live again. I had forgotten that being around other musicians, above all else, is where I'm most comfortable. Now, I'm finding so many things I like. It may never compare to the things I loved when I was 19 or maybe it will. Somewhere along the way, I had forgotten that I became a musician because I LOVE music. I just remembered.
Mat Kearney is a new artist I saw in concert late last year that I highly recommend.Amazing stuff to be honest... www.matkearney.com
This band is hardly new, but I would gather not known too well here in the U.S. This band is Pulp. They had done several albums but their breakthrough was "Different Class". The singer reminds me A LOT of David Bowie and they have some elements that other Brit-Pop bands of that period have in like Blur, Oasis, Verve, etc. But that "Different Class" CD is an unbelievably good CD. If you like Bowie and Brit-Pop (especially Blur), you have to check this album out!
