    Hey,

3814 ... thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, its true that they don't write their own music (altho this song is written by her), but she does have a great voice :) And you're right, you definitely don't have to like her or the tons of artists like her.

Manny, thanks for the post ... although its not like I'm proud to like a certain kind of music or anything ... I listen to basically all kinds of music, it just has to make me feel good. I can go from listening to Jazz to listening to Christina to some 70s rock then some classical ... so it just depends on the mood. If at a certain point you liked some pop music, don't feel bad bout it :) ... don't they say music is the soundtrack to your life ... it just reflects you at that time, so its all good! I still like some of the most ghastly songs from the early 90s :(

Now, to more important things ... WWMD?!?!?

I think the important question is, What Wouldn't Manny Do?

or to be more precise, What Wouldn't Manny Listen TO (WWMLT)

I dont think I've ever met anyone with such diverse musical tastes...

    That's easy, 2K.

Manny doesn't listen to bluegrass, hard core country, or pop (not anymore). I also have a hard time with rap unless it is classic old-school like Run-DMC or the Fat Boys (none of this Eminem ****). I also disdain "nu-metal" (but not all), especially Slipknot. Lukewarm on Korn, Staind, Incubus, etc...my problem is that there are too many of them and they all sound the same. I do like Tool very much, but I consider them more progressive hard rock. Deftones are okay as is System of a Down but that is about it. I still am thinking about giving some of these other bands a try like Disturbed, Godsmack, etc, but there are other CDs out there that I want to get first.

Thanks for what I consider a compliment, 2K in the diversity of musical tastes.

I have always enjoyed music, but it wasn't until really 2 years ago that I "broadened my horizons". I credit Moby's "Play" with that and it seemed like everything fell into place. I have never gotten into music for the lyrics....I have gotten into it for the musicianship and how the entire track sounds after being put together. To me, nothing is more satisfying than listening to a track and realizing, that even though it was the 5th time you heard it, you heard something different or something new. To me, that makes a CD timeless. Of course, I love synthesized music since I grew up as a child of the '80s but I love music that is heavily driven by guitars. The genres that I like (with some of my favorite artists) include the following:

    1) Jazz - Coltrane, Miles, Hancock
    2) Techno/electronica - too many to name here but will go with New Order, Kraftwerk, Orbital, Massive Attack, Moby, and Aphex Twin
    3) Hard Rock (includes Grunge) - Soundgarden, Cult, Danzig, Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains
    4) Punk Rock - the Clash, Buzzcocks, Less Than Jake (great ska band), Operation Ivy-Rancid, old Offspring, old Green Day, the Ramones, and the Misfits (Danzig-led only)
    5) Post-Punk/Alternative - Joy Division, Smashing Pumpkins, the Smiths, the Cure, the Pixies, Sonic Youth, Elvis Costello, and My Bloody Valentine
    6) Heavy Metal - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, Judas Priest (Halford led only), Ozzy (esp with Randy Rhodes), early Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura with Max Cavalera, and AC/DC
    7) Industrial - Nine Inch Nails (the quintessential Industrial artist), Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, Pig, and Ministry
    8) World/Ethereal - some of Peter Gabriel's stuff like Passion, Delerium, Enigma, Vangelis, Sarah McLachlan, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and Mike Oldfield
    9) Classic stuff like Beatles, Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, and Bee Gees
    10) British Alternative (one I'm just getting into) - Radiohead (Duh!), Coldplay, and will be getting soon stuff like the Verve, Blur, Travis, Oasis, and others.

So, yea, I guess you are right, 2K, in that I have a diverse taste in music. :D

I think this is a REALLY tremendous point. In truth, most of the great jazz artists of our time don't do much composing and many from previous era's don't either. As much as I liked some of John Coltrane's compositions, I'd rather here him do My Favorite Things just about any day of the week.

In fact, it wasn't really until the Beatles stopped doing cover songs (um, Twist and Shout, Rock and Roll Music, et al) and starting writing cheesy pop songs like Please, Please Me and Love Me Do that musicans and bands began to ROUTINELY write their own material.

Finally, just because you can write music doesn't make you a good songwriter. IMO, it is RARE to hear a great song on alt.rock radio, for example, and rap/hip hop haven't contributed much either. As much as I hate country and stright pop music (though the latter much less than the former), I can tell you that many of those songs are far more memorable than whatever Papa Roach or Jay Z just did. No offense to them because I like them both just fine.

But, if you want to say Christina is a bad artist because she doesn't write her own songs, that's a stretch. There have been plenty of tremendous artists who didn't write or play ANYTHING. Unfortunately, singers get hammered when they don't write even when musicians like guitar players and drummers don't. When's the last time you heard a great songwriting drummer? Does that make them poor artists? Hardly.

I'm just gonna sit here and wait for my top 3 most anticipated albums of 2002. U2 best of 1990-2000(special edition with b-sides baby), the new Pearl Jam CD, and the new Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers(the first single Last DJ gives me a good feeling about this album, might be up there with Wild flowers, Into the great wide open, damn the torpedoes etc.)

This is true, I have been guilty of slammin the bg-popsters because they don't write or perform their own stuff. I will never slam the musicians cause they dont write their own stuff, just the fact that they can play it is enough for me.
When was the last time I heard a great songwriting drummer?....hmmm... can you say Neil Peart? Kelly Keagy? thats just 2 right off the top of my head..I'm sure I could think of more..

Manny, that was intended as a compliment, when it comes to music and this bbs..I always eagerly await any threads by you and Jeff on music. It gives me a subject that I feel knowledgable enough to comment at length on..
Go ahead and check out Godsmack, they are one of the better of the new hard rock bands out right now, imo.

LOL, i hope she has a better single to send to pop radio other than this big steaming pile of crap. This chick's career is circling the drain! This song is a trainwreck! And right now its struggling to crack the bottom of the top 40 in the charts.
