When I replaced the AC at my parents home about 6-7 years ago, I called around asking every company for a quote on a Lennox 16 seer and they all wanted 8-10k installed. One of the companies finally caved and installed it for around $4k. When I asked the other companies if they could do better, they laughed and told me there's no way I will get it that cheap.

If it were me, I would go with a reputable brand and a 16+ seer. Well, depends on how long you plan on living in the home. If you aren't going to live there long, get something cheap. If you are staying there indefinitely, spend the extra for quality. The savings in the long run from using less electricity will make it worthwhile imo.

It doesn't make sense to replace just that at this point cause the system is about 15 years old. Since we have no plans of moving anytime soon, I'd rather drop my money into a new system.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I've gotten a few more quotes now, but may decide to try a few more companies listed here. Much better ones too! One was for an American Standard 16 SEER for $7,500 and then a Carrier 16 SEER for $6,800.

What's interesting is every company has a different opinion on which brand is the best. Makes the decision all the more confusing!

I would buy this, and have someone come install it if it were me.

    $4000 for a 4 unit setup, 17.5 SEER.
