I'm in the fitness industry and have visited many nice YMCA's. I am not sure about their memberships or prices but if there was one in my neighborhood I'd probably join. I'd like to think its not as bad as the common corporate money hungry cash hordes known as 24, bally's LA fitness etc. when it comes to harassing people, poor customer service, billing issues, ridiculous contracts etc. Also the Y's that I've visited from my experience are cleaner, have good bball competition, less meat-heads and equal the amount if not more amount of hot women compared to regular gyms. The only thing is there's a lot of old people (senior citizens) at YMCA's but they're nice and harmless
That happened to my friends too. The people told them they can add account for free and **** and they told them that the "free" account holders could come in anytime even if your not there. But when they started going they said they can't go unless the other member is there and it has to be before 6 or 8 or something. And the other people are also not paying him.
Anyone ever joined Memorial Athletic Club at Dairy Ashford/Memorial? Its a monthly contract. Ive cancelled a couple times and rejoined. They are cool.
Man you just stated everything I've experienced at the Y. No sales people trying to harass you, excellent customer service, no billing issues or ridiculous contracts. They actually try to work with you regardless of your situation. Larger gym than 24 or LA and decent competition, more family guys than meathead/douches that you get at the courts at 24 or LA. Like you said, only thing is a lot of old people and I can never get over how brazen some of these old cats are. I'm tired of seeing some old wrinkly dude walking around the locker room naked. I'm a young and sprite lad but I'm a bit shy about walking around a locker room naked so it's a little weird to see an 80 yr old guy doing it. Ah, but they're all nice and the ladies are decent but I don't go there for that. All in all an excellent choice if one has a decent location by them.
the Y would be great, but for all the kids running around the basketball court come fall/winter. equipment is limited too. couldnt quite understand the oldies who REFUSE to use towels and just strut around naked.
Usually I've been affiliated with a college (work, school, recent alumni...) and been able to work out for a reasonable amount (or free) that way. At other times, I've joined local community fitness centers. They're pretty straightforward and don't mess with you. If I was still in Houston, I would have gone with the Y. They have good facilities and are better deals, and again none of that weird BS with the contracts.
