Hi, yeah, uh, Yi has neither of those. And before you go jumping on me about the jump shot look at his FG%. Basically he's Keith Van Horn circa 2005.
Actually, yes. KVH was a good jump shooter who could rebound. And, if he were 7 feet tall and athletic he probably would have stayed in the league longer. I wish everyone would understand that a low fg% does not mean someone is a poor shooter. Yi's fg% is low because he does not score around the rim.
What does it mean then? Other good perimeter oriented shooters shoot a much higher percentage because they are indeed better shooters. From what posters are saying, Yi's shots are also usually uncontested so shooting sub 40 % is downright horrific for a supposedly good shooter.
I don't know how this is so difficult to grasp. A perimeter jumpshot is a low percentage field goal attempt. A layup or dunk is a very high percentage field goal attempt. Shaq's jump shot is non-existent yet his fg% is 61%. Aaron Brooks is clearly a much better jump shooter and yet his fg% is 40.4%, much lower. Yi shoots 42%, there are plenty of good shooters who have a similar fg%. He needs to improve his finishing ability and his fg% will improve similar to the way Kevin Durant's did this season.
Any body think that an athletic PF like Yi with a jump shot wouldn't last in the league is wrong. You can't coach size, he's tall and mobile and he will have a chance in the league. He will not be left out of an NBA roster On the other hand, Stromile Swift was an athletic PF with range, and look where he's ending up, if Yi doesn't improve his game, that's most likely where his career will head.
I wouldn't call him a bust just yet. He'll never live up to that number 7 overall pick but he could still have a productive NBA career. He needs to go a west coast franchise with a large Asian population (or a place like Houston with a large Asian population) and have the support of the fan-base. I could see him at Golden State, Sacramento, LA Clippers, or even Portland.
Yao has a hard time playing with all the referees around giving Yao unfair treatment. Yi has way less talent than Yao WITH Yao's treatment. What can we expect out of him? He'll probably shoot than drive in knowing he isn't going to get any referee respect.
Seriously, what the hell happened to him? I still remember that game against the Bucks where he showed tons of potential. The guy has done nothing but regress since. If Yi's okay with playing alongside Yao, I wouldn't mind bringing him here. He's still 7 foot tall and fairly athletic. And right now the Rockets could use some size size with Deke no longer available. Of course, this is based on the assumption that his problems are mental, rather than physical.
I never understood why Clutchfans hate Yi so much I'm suspecting suppressed racism that needed an outlet but couldn't take it out on Yao too often since he's still a Rocket
Yi shot 38.2 % this year. His career % is a little over 40 %. Ray is an excellent example of a perimeter shooter who shoots a good % because he is actually a good shooter. Good shooters DONT shoot 38.2 % wide open. And Yi's shooting got WORSE this year. he never fully recovered from the finger injury and his bad performances just killed whatever confidence he had left. He's going to get alot better beacause of rest and strength training this season, plus its a contract year. I hope the Rockets can pick him up, if not Golden State!
It's not suppressed racism. It's just called being a realist. Yi just isn't that good and neither is Sun Yue for that matter. (I thought I should throw that in not because they're both Chinese but because I live in LA and was excited for LA to get Sun Yue only to be met with disappointments) Yao is like a diamond in the rough and Yi is no diamond.
