As has been reported for a bit now, New York's reluctance to part with more of its talent has been part of the reason why the Nuggets and Knicks' negotiations have never advanced to a serious point for Carmelo Anthony. And as Alan Hahn of Newsday tweeted Friday, there's one specific player at issue here. "Source tells Newsday Knicks reluctance to include Danilo Gallinari in talks with Denver is hang-up in deal for Carmelo," he wrote. With news now that the Nets and Nuggets have a tentative deal in place pending Melo approval on an extension with New Jersey, it's possible the Knicks could lose out on Melo if they don't up their offer.
Commented because I wanted to. I'm tired of this crap because it changes every day. Melo wants to go Knicks, Nets want Melo, Nets drop out for Melo, Lakers want Melo, Lakers don't really really want Melo, Melo may resign, As Albert Pujols would say 'Cmon mang!'
I agree with your description of why Melo is doing what's best for him -- become of free agent. But, Denver will get screwed. They are going out of their way to give him a good option. Right? Least he could do is go talk to NJ.
LOL if Gallo is holding up the deal for the Knicks. What is the rumored package that the Knicks are offering?
completely agree. i've been watching Favors for about 10 games. I don't get it. He doesn't have *any* basketball skills. Another Stromile Swift?
This doesn't make sense. You're trying to show what is better than the Knicks offer, which has clearly been rejected by Denver. The Market is higher than that. Probably much higher...and Nets just found out where the market is. So how are the outbidding themselves versus a rejected Knicks offer. Plus, you have to think about crushing the Knicks spirit to deal.
Surpised Harrington isnt in the deal. This leaves the opportunity for us to use "absorbing his contract" as a sweetner in any Nene trade.
I hope this happens so the knicks will suck and we can snag Nene. Lol @ Melo though, the Nets are gonna suck major D for a long time playing 3v5(Melo, Chancey, and Lopez) with no draft picks coming in. I wonder how long it will take him to demand a trade from Jersey?
Not sure of the exact package. Though just saw this from NY Daily News Dolan meets with Carmelo late Thursday
imo, little chance of him ever being better than Kenyon or Nene, and he is nowhere near the class of Cousins (bball-wise).
The Package is something centered around Wilson Chandler, Gallo, Mozgov, Fields, Felton, and two picks for Melo, Billups, Melvin Ely, and Ronaldo Balkman. Might be off by a pick or two but something witht the same players. -Pretty much giving up the farm and the Knicks would essentially be left with PG-Billups, Douglas, Rautins SG-Bill Walker, Mason Jr, SF-Melo, Azabuke, Williams PF-Amare, Ely, Balkman C-Turiaf -Assuming Curry and Randolph get traded to Minnesota for the 1st rd pick. -This is a pretty bad supporting cast, but having two star players to build around is a good start. Other free agent Veterans would come there in the summer to help shape out the roster on the cheap. I assume Rip Hamilton might even arrange a buyout to joing them and fill in the SG role.
-Also dont forget that Billups has a team buyout option for next season so its very possible that if the deal got done soon enough they could flip Billups to a team looking for cost cutting almost instantly for some young assets. Billups could be very useful this postseason for the Knicks if they make the playoffs but is most likely not the long term solution they would want. Wouldn't rule out a buyout situation that sent him back to the Nuggets in the summer. -Would be willing to bet that the Rockets would be willing to negotiate a buyout with Jefferies to get him back in New York if they cannot trade his contract before next week. He could get valuable playing time off the bench for them and backup Amare and Turiaf very well. -The Knicks NEED to make this trade now even if it looks like its gutting their team NOW, they have a much brighter future for the next five seasons, and could go past the first round of the playoffs THIS YEAR. -The Knicks are the worst organization in the NBA if they dont make that deal.
No need for them to do that. They'd be well under luxury tax. Harris, Lawson Afflalo, Smith Harrinton, Forbes Favors, Martin Nene, Birdman Decent team they can try to win with now as well as go forward with Favors.
One of these two teams will need to gut their roster to get Melo, I think NY is better prepared to do so and survive long term. They could have Melo and Amare plus have enough money this summer to fill out the rest of their roster with a center and PGuard or center and SG. Short term, they may not make the playoffs this season. They will be severely gutted and unlike Miami that had time to revamp their roster, NY won't be able to acquire anyone besides D-Leaguers. They could take a severe tumble this season, which could be good for the Rockets and they incredibly still be able to flip picks depending on what else happens at the deadline.
What about the Knicks trade - Felton, Lawson Afflalo, Smith Gallo, Chandler, Harrington, Forbes Martin Nene, Mozgov, Birdman +Curry's Expiring and 1 first round pick vs the above roster and 4 first round picks. -New Jersey has a much better offer even with the Knicks giving up all their decent role players.
Looks good to me, especially if they get Rip somehow. Getting a superstar player than makes his teammates better (some stat report showed Melo's teammates shoot 5% higher from the field when he is in the game) is worth a lot more than what they are giving up. Plus Walsh has done well at acquiring solid talent for them with late draft picks. IMO, The future would be very bright for the Knicks if they just get the deal done.
If they are so high on Lawson I don't understand why they want Felton. On first view at that roster you posted it looks to me that Denver would like to stay in the playoffs picture rather than tank making it more doubtful that we could fetch Nene, in this particular scenario.
Partially agree with that. I think alot depends on the situation with Billups. If the Knicks can flip Billups for some players of value or get good production out of him in a post ASG playoff run then its bad for the Rockets. -If Billups is disgruntled regarding the trade and no other moves are made then I could see the Knicks winning alot less games then they would have had with the quality role players they gave up. -To me Billups is the Vet PG that could pull everything together and make the mediocre role players like Walker and Mason Jr. better. His contract situation going into next season gives them a great asset to play with though if they can flip him before the trade deadline.
