If Melo really wants to go "home," I can't for the life of me figure out the difference between the Nets and Knicks. Both are sorry teams and Newark is what, 15 miles, 20 tops, from New York? Heck, that's closer than the Woodlands or even Spring is from Houston. I sure a Melo deal goes through soon so all the other dominoes will start to fall.
NY blogger's saying that Melo will reject the extension, according to his sources. Hopefully that's false and we can all move on.
I hope Melo doesn't approve of this trade. If he wants to go to the Knicks and will do so at the end of the year no matter what he should say it right now. Don't want the Nets just trading all that for a rental.
why? He gets his franchise player just in time to open his new arena. He clears cap space and keep his young center. He sticks it to the Knicks. It's paying a premium but most of those 1st round picks aren't even New Jersey's.
If there are no takers with space, taking on Yao's contract that is being paid partially by insurance would seem to be the next best thing.
I'm pretty certain the trade would be an extend & trade, which means Carmelo could not leave the Nets after the season.
U serious? This deal is the Nets only hope of becoming relevant this century. Get Melo, attract another big FA in a year or two (while hopefully making a couple of smart deals in between).
...couldn't disagree more. Melo would be a huge score for the Nets - even if they have to overpay for him in the trade. He gives them a bankable star, a hometown hero for when they move to Brooklyn, a shot of at least being a playoff team in the East with just Melo/Billups, and best of all he sticks it to his cross town rival in the Knicks. He can't open up a brand new stadium in Brooklyn(that he helped fund) that has a direct competitor a short cab ride away(a playoff team no less) if his roster is Favors/Harris/Lopez.
The Nets HAVE to do this. They are really going to have to sell Melo on the idea that they can bring in a big FA in 2012, though, because if I were Melo, I'd choose the Knicks in a heartbeat.
This, pretty much. While the "picks not being NJ's" justification is a bit "Charlie Casserly-like", just note that: (1) The 2011 Nets' pick was going to have to be included, regardless. (2) The 2011 Lakers' pick is not that great; no big deal giving that up. (3) The 2012 Rockets' (lottery-protected) pick is likely going to be a mid-first rounder (not a huge deal to trade) and may not even be conveyed for several years (although let's hope not!). (4) The 2012 GSW conditional (top-8) protected pick was originally traded to New Jersey for . . . Marcus freakin' Williams. While it is very valuable, the Nets never actually gave up anything of substance to get it in the first place. (Here is where the Casserly justification comes in. He used this to justify the Philip Buchanon deal. Never liked that explanation.) Other than money, here is the end result of what the Nets gave up to get all those picks: --2011 NJ first round pick (this is what it is) --Terrence Williams --Joe Smith --Marcus Williams That's hardly "giving up the farm" from New Jersey's big picture perspective.
Exactly. Brook Lopez with a level headed PG like Chauncey could see a big improvement outside of his rebounding issues. Fill in the rest of the blanks with great defenders and solid shooters via trade and you have a very high chance of pulling a Chris Paul calibre player to you. Because of the LeBron-Wade-Bosh, Rondo-KG-Pierce-Allen, Kobe-Gasol-Odom, Parker-Ginobili-Duncan gangs that dominate the league.
With those chiming in as to who wins in the deal: Our Rockets are proof enough that you can slap all the good players you can together...they don't balance out against a franchise player. This is a star driven league - you either have one of the best, or you're wallowing. Look at the top 4 in each conference - takes a milisec to count the future HOFer(s) on each squad. (May be premature with Rose, but he's in the least a MVP candidate) If you can send out secondary starters and bench players for a guy that is top 3 at his position, you do it. If you toss in a gaggle of draft picks, especially in a year without a score of exciting "future star" prospects, so be it. What will upset me is if the Knicks somehow get him for 30 cents on the dollar compared to this deal.
'Melo says no meeting. Carmelo Anthony tells AP: "no meeting at all'' scheduled with the New Jersey Nets and reported meeting is "news to me.""
This justification could also be used for trading Scola. We only gave up Spanoulis for him, but yet he is one of our most valuable players. That justification is hogwash. The Warriors pick is valuable. 4 1st round picks and Favors is way too much, considering that the Knicks could only come up with 1 first round pick, Gallinari, and Chandler. Also, 2 of NJ's picks should be in the lottery, and NY's pick (from MIN) would be a mid-late 1st rounder.
ESPN just reported the Melo said he has not agreed to meet with the Nets to discuss signing an extention. I'm sorry IMO Melo is beginning to look worst the Lebron did. He's flirting with teams and even has some people thinking he may want to stay in Denver..THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!
Plus you might even convince some 2nd-tier free agents to sign on as depth whenever the NBA returns from its lockout. Granted, given a choice between Miami and Jersey/Brooklyn, free agents might prefer the former as far as location/star power, but the teams will have different needs anyway.
