That would give them about $22 million to give to Manu and the 8 other players they would need to round out the roster. Plus the threshold will likely go down this next year and in 2010. I don't see the Spurs making this trade.
Manu will be traded, but a prearranged agreement between the teams will have Manu being cut and then resigned to the Spurs for the veteran's minimum.
http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/02/carter-buzz-hea.html Carter buzz heating up By Jeff McDonald on Feb 14, 2009 8:32 AM That Vince-Carter-to-Spurs rumor seems to have heated up overnight, with some sources indicating San Antonio to be the most likely destination for the mercurial New Jersey shooting guard. The latest scenario would have the Spurs sending Roger Mason, George Hill, Fabricio Oberto and Bruce Bowen to New Jersey for Carter. New Jersey would then immediately waive Oberto and Bowen, to get themselves under the 15-man roster limit. The benefit for the Spurs would be obvious: They would acquire an elite, All-Star caliber scorer on the wing. The deal, however, would not be painless: They would have to part with Mason, a top-notch 3-point shooter, and Hill, a rookie point guard who had figured prominently into the team's long range plans. The benefit for the Nets would be mostly financial. They would clear Carter's $16.1 million salary from the books. No deal was imminent as of this morning, but this development will be something worth monitoring throughout All-Star Weekend. UPDATE: One problem with the deal proposed here. Under NBA rules, it would be illegal. In order for a team to take four players for one, it must make room on the 15-man roster BEFORE the deal is consummated. It doesn't matter if the plan is to waive a couple of the incoming players after the deal is done. In order for the Spurs and Nets to make this deal, the Nets -- who are already at the 15-man limit -- would have to waive three of their own players first. Obviously, that's not going to happen. Doesn't neccesarily mean there is no deal for Carter in the works, but it isn't this deal.
The Nets can waive Stromile, Ager, and CDR to make the roster spaces. Allegedly Stromile doesn't want to play again this season. Nets wouldn't be considering this deal if Ager was any good. acquiring Mason & Hill couldn't push him any further down the bench. Both Ager and Stromile have expiring contacts while CDR has a team option that'll likely not get picked up if this deal goes through.
Looks like all of Texas wants this guy http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/57242/20090214/dallas_houston_have_interest_in_carter/
tim duncan just hasn't had enough of a supporting cast throughout his career. he really needs vince. and hell, shaq's phoenix team is kind of falling off and shaq's never allowed to be on a non-contending team, so maybe he can go to the spurs, too. however, as much as this move would piss me off, that 20-1 bet i made on the spurs to win the title would start looking a lot better. i wish i could trade that in for their current 8-1 odds.
I don't get why the nets want that deal so bad. They got a great pg in devin harris and dooling is a good backup. George Hill is good but seems like overkill. Mason is a great shooter but they have Jarvis Hayes already there whose a deadeye but a 3. Bobby Simmons is awful but can hit the 3 as well. Douglas Roberts seems like a better fit for a fast breaking guard like Devin Harris to run with. The more pressing need for them is the 4 because Ryan Anderson and yi jianlin aren't ever gonna scare KG out east but brook lopez is looking mighty good.
it's not going to happen if so alot of spurs fans will be pissed trust me they have about a 30 page thread about this trade on spurstalk we hate san antonio and he won't help this trade when we go against the lakers we want rasheed and i think spurs might land them if all goes well
The thing is, this doesn't seem like a Spurs type of trade. They never went for the big flashy high profile trades. They just went for solid pieces to fit around their Big 3. Then when those pieces no longer fit or outlived their usefulness, Pops gets rid of them. I really don't know why Pops would want VC. Not his type of player IMO.
Manu will NOT take a pay cut. The man already won a couple of Championships so money is more important to him after that.
speaking of the nets, when the hell is Yi scheduled to return? he broke his finger early january and was predicted to be out for 4 weeks the kid was really starting to get good too, averaging like 20ppg the 5 games before he got injured
Yeah but we are talking about winning all 4 games and best out of 7. Getting out of the West is not that easy. Another big star would greatly take the burden off Duncan and crew.
Again, not a Pops/Spurs type of move or their type of player. They know that just getting another big name star doesn't necessarily mean your team got better. Ask the Pistons. They've won with an old Brent Barry and an old Mike Finley. Getting VC and his bloated contract would be out of character for Pops and the Spurs. I actually want this trade to happen cause I think the Spurs would be going backwards IMO.
i bet he will hell be 33 espically if he signs for another 3 years or even 4 he'll get maybe 4 million and never rule out the possibility of the spurs getting rasheed wallace this offseason if we don't get him by the trade deadline hopefully the spurs don't get of hill by the way and possibily trade carter before 2010 or even buy him out if we can but still pay some of his salary and have enough money in 2010 to offer chris bosh a 6 year 84 million dollar contract
