How do you get pornos from Netflix? I'm a member and they haven't mentioned this fringe benefit to me.

Maybe it was Wal-Mart then... I don't know, he's tried a couple so when I see mail-in rentals, they almost all seem the same to me.

The H.E.B. at Westheimer and Fountain View has one of those too.

I've always been curious, but Netflix called me in a different direction.

It's $19.99 a month plus two free movies each month. If you can watch at least four movies a month you get your money's worth. But that means you would need to watch at least 48 movies a year to break even. To put that in perspective, it means you probably would be watching the following types of movies in 2003.

    2003 Rank gross sales:

    59 Runaway Jury
    60 Peter Pan
    61 Agent Cody Banks
    62 The Jungle Book 2
    63 The Rundown
    64 Final Destination
    65 Phone Booth
    66 28 Days Later

That's not too bad in my opinion. Those are decent movies. 48 is an awful lot tho.

For a Year of Blockbuster online (48 movies): $239
For a Year of Movies at Theatre: $408
For a Year of buying movies (14.99): $719

After looking at the numbers, It's decent deal in my opinion, if you watch a lot of movies.

I would say that if you watch at least 28 movies a year it's beneficial to just join blockbuster financially.

The other thing to consider is the over due rentals charge and driving cost in time/money. This killed my enthusiasm for video tape rentals. With netflix, the calculation is just as you portrayed it. Is it the same way with blockbuster - no more late charge?

I have netflix and I love it, but I really throw the money away because I don't use it that much -- I usually rent somewhere around 3 to 5 movies a month at most. But I really enjoy the convenience of it. I think I'm going to cancel it though -- I need to start saving money.

Netflix loves me. I had JFK out from July of 2002 to June of 2003. It moved with me!

I've got you beat. I've had Sweet Home Alabama since June of 2003. I told someone I'd watch it even though I can't stand Reese Witherspoon for some reason. I just can't pull myself to watch it - so there it sits. I always return and get 2 other movies, but this 3rd one just sits...

That's how it goes with me. There's always that one movie. And when I finally watch it and send it back, it's replacement sits right there in the same spot.

The reason for that is that I tend to use Netflix for older movies that I've never seen but have always wanted to. That's why I think this $1 deal will be good because it has all the new releases, which I end up getting at Blockbuster anyway.

I watch more movies when I have access to more movies. One of the reasons I don't end up watching stuff is because I don't want to get out and trek to the local Blockbuster and pay $4.50 or so per rental (and be limited by their limited selection, which doesn't include a lot of classic movies I've wanted to see for some time).

But I know I was already on the higher end of the movie-watching demographic. I would bet that 100 movies would be the low estimate of how many I'll watch this year in total (heck, I've watched at least ten in the last week, not to mention I watched the first three episodes of Monk on DVD tonight so far and will probably get through at least the second disc - three more episodes - before I go to bed).

And even at the rate I rent movies, it'll probably be well over a year before I get through my queue (which is filled with movies I've either never seen or movies I haven't seen in a long time... or TV shows I haven't seen). I've found that my willingness to rent something is greater when I know I'm paying a flat fee no matter what I rent. I've hated, in the past, renting something that was crappy any thinking "I paid $4.50 to watch that piece of crap."

OK, I haven' gotten a movie from Netflix in 5 days. This is above and beyond a new record.

    I'm getting nervous.

That is bad. I'd be starting to think there was a billing problem (if none have been sent) or they got lost in the mail (if Netflix says they were sent).

I got my first bad disc from them today. Wouldn't play at all in either of my players. So, I'll have to wait a little longer to watch Firefly: Disc 1, I guess.

I think Blockbuster just fell out of the race today. I mean, since I started my free trial, there was a lot of stuff that had a wait listed (compared to my Netflix queue which had very few things with a wait listed), but as of this morning EVERYTHING is on short wait. It doesn't matter what I select, it's got a short wait (including titles that were listed as long wait or very long wait last night). I find it hard to believe that their entire selection has been shipped out to others. I assume they're having some sort of computer problems.

I had been considering buying the Firefly set. I was a Buffy fan from the get-go and have bought those DVD sets. I didn't watch Angel on TV, but bought the first set when it came out and ended up liking it very much. So Joss Whedon's got a good track record with me...

That's a big disadvantage I heard about Blockbuster, their selection is just not as good. They may have many of the same titles, but they are more stringent when it comes to movies with wide screen or some of the NR type movies like Badder Santa or any of those other types of films. Also if you're into foreign or indie films, Blockbuster is less likely to have the movies than Netflix.

    Go with Netflix.

Blockbuster actually made the decision several months ago to go with Widescreen. I know at my store, it's difficult to find full screen movies (of course, the studios have made it difficult to get full screen movies on a lot of titles), and the prohibition against unrated versions that has been a knock against Blockbuster for years appears to be loosening. I noted the Eurotrip unrated edition being in my local store. Now that you mention it, the version of Bad Santa they have is the "Badder Santa' Unrated edition (as does the online rental service).

But I have definitely noticed several movies that I am interested in renting that aren't on Blockbuster's service that are on Netflix. So far, I've only found two movies that were on Blockbuster and not on Netflix (and I requested them on Netflix, so maybe they'll add them).

Blockbuster did fix the server problems quickly that put everything on "Short Wait" and did shipped out an order to me that day.

I imagine I'll end up sticking with Netflix over Blockbuster, but I'll let the month run and really see how they do.

I have noticed the same thing at my local blocbuster. They are now carrying almost all of the unrated/supposed directors cuts. I think about the only thing they dont carry is nc-17 versions.

I have hunted around on there new site and they appear to have a pretty good selection. But they still dont beat Netflix on the more esoteric stuff.

anyone try the walmart.com version? You can get 4 DVDs at a time and seem to have a good amount of movies to pick from..
