Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Is Coming To Netflix Cowboy Bebop is getting a live-action series on Netflix, with the anime’s creator Shinichiro Watanabe consulting. The Cowboy Bebop anime debuted back in 1998 with Watanabe at the helm. The live-action first episode will be written by Christopher Yost, who recently penned Thor: Ragnarok. In the late 2000s, Keanu Reeves was attached to a live-action movie adaptation as protagonist Spike Spiegel but the production never got off the ground. “Cowboy Bebop does not look like it is going to happen with me in it.” Reeves wrote in a 2013 Reddit Q&A, adding that the script was “great and amazing,” but would “cost like a half a billion dollars to make.” Hopefully, this Netflix series will cost less!
what live action remake of an anime have people liked? I feel like a live action remake of Cowboy Bebop exists and its called Firefly.
there hasn't been a good anime live adaptation. the japanese ones are worse than the hollywood efforts which says a lot. i reckon the guy who made the bladerunner sequel could make something good.
Realistically, this being a great show is extremely plausible with a proper budget. There isn't a ton of over the top stuff that undercuts most anime adaptations, nor would whitewashing be an issue. Plus a series format allows for development instead of the cluttered rush job we see in movies. Having said that, the track record for live action anime is so comically bad, it's impossible to have high expectations.
I think for it to work, they plunge you into the world and make it a character drivendheist movie rather than dive into their origins. More TV pilot for anime firefly than an origin movie
They got the guy who made Cowboy Bebop as a consulate on the show. And they got the guy who wrote Thor: Ragnarok which I think is a low key great move. People will say Bebop is a serious anime so why get the guy who wrote Ragnarok? Bebop has a lot of goofy elements in the story. Firefly is a live action remake of Outlaw Star now Cowboy Bebop.
I think they were a little too faithful with Spikes look, and not faithful enough with Faye's look. Not saying she had to wear as little as she does in the anime, but she doesn't look anything like the character. Jet looks great, and all in all it doesn't look bad visually.
Faye is hot enough for me to dig the look. I don't know how "purists" will complain but I like the multicultural look. Makes the future more believable, imo.
Jon Cho looks miscast to me, I'm not quite feeling it. Gonna keep my expectations low for this as well.
The creator of the anime doesn't look like he's involved at all. "The live-action remake of Cowboy Bebop debuts on Netflix this fall, and fans are worried that it will fail to live up to the beloved anime, a sentiment echoed by its creator, Shinichirō Watanabe. During a 2019 interview with Japanese news outlet Otaquest that recently resurfaced on the YouTube channel of Hero Hei, Watanabe is quoted as saying, “I have no choice but to pray and hope that it will turn out good.” Watanabe is listed as a consultant for the series in recently released promotional materials from Netflix, according to Bounding Into Comics, but as Watanabe explained in the 2019 interview, “I don’t have any right to stop” decisions made by the new production team. “Those rights are in the hands of Sunrise, so if you have a complaint, please send it to them.” Bounding Into Comics quotes series star John Cho, who plays the bounty hunter Spike Spiegel, confirming that the live-action crew “did not communicate” with Watanabe."
