Except Good Will Hunting was about 5 years after that skit. So maybe they used it from Ben Stiller.

 

I think he means well and I think people who are really in the dumps can get positive lessons out of the seminar, but he really does wing it. I mean... LOL.

 

I wasn't referencing the sketch although I posted right after it was posted . The reference was to the mention of an education you could get at a public library, taken directly from Good Will Hunting, and used here by the OP to make himself appear intelligent

Yes, he comes to these grand conclusions about people's lives without knowing a damn thing about them. That's scary. I think he means well, but it feels manipulative.

Not TOO surprising to me. Like Billy Mays, Mays was a hard cocaine user. His energy and attitude WAS his living. Its not the product itself, its creating the "sizzle" that sells.

Motivation talk and salesmanship is almost all about projection of ENERGY and EMOTION. It takes a certain "Always-On" light to be on to connect with people. The sales field has higher % people that might use substances to keep giving them an edge. To them its simply the more consistent relentless energy you have, the more you get back. If your energy lags, then you dont connect. I was recently in a sales company that played motivational talk EEEVERY DAY. (SO glad THATS over)

Personally I'm okay with Tony Robbins. I dont think he's the best, but he is good at coming across as a kind warm uncle/big brother. He does have good things to say, but that is the key to his success, coming across as "accessible" (so he can have access into your impressionable vulnerable wallet).

I DONT think he should act as some sort of MORAL standard though. Being PRODUCTIVE and being MORALISTIC are 2 different things. (Which is why sales and motivational people will alwayw have the element of con-artist about them, cuz its a "WHATEVER it TAKES" game to persuade)

 

He premiered it at SXSW and couldn't even fill the bottom tier of the Paramount. It was awkward. And I'm a fan. It felt like a weird megachurch.
