I could have sworn that I read about the Netflix horror season of Ares here, but I can't find any discussion here.

I saw some reviews that said this series was so scary people couldn't finish watching it. I think a more accurate description is that it was so scarily lackluster that people didn't want to continue watching it.

The Dutch "horror" story revolves around a college girl named Rosa that is not well off as well as having a mom dealing with psychotic issues. She seems have the classic, "you can't tell me what I can't do" persona, and she discovers a secret society/fraternity (that of course always has some dark secrets) that her best friend is joining.

I was hoping for something much more sinister and gory than what I got, which was a meandering snooze fest that I continued to watch hoping for a satisfying shock moment. It never came.

There are maybe 3 satisfying horror/gore scenes, the first in the first 3 minutes of the 1st show, one mid season, and one at the end of the season.

Each episode is around 30 minutes long, and some episodes do seem to fly by. Most of the show felt like those game of thrones episodes that you were waiting for something kickass to happen, but it was just a development episode that left you feeling like you just wasted that amount of time in your life.

All in all, I would say stay away. Maybe Dutch horror is just something I don't get, but this season could have/should have been condensed into a 1.5 hour movie instead of dragging it out for 4 hours.

That's the name of the secret society that Rose is joining.

Shucks. I was hoping it was short for Are(ola)s.

No such luck. I think there's one worthy scene.

Heh all their viral marketing strategy, about ppl tweeting "too scary to finish", sucked me in, but no. What a joke.

Agree with Op. Three eps in, not very recommended.

I powered through that initial lull, and it got better. Or else just found a better way to watch it- Not a scary show at all, and some of those do scare me quite a bit, but had a nice feel you start to like, visually all the contrasting bright clean architecture like the surgery theater and windmill walks, to all the dark old school castle like sets with lots of wood, books and dim lamps. The lead actor was pretty good too.

    Good not great, interesting/different.

Yeah, I'm sure it has redeeming qualities. However, I would have rather they sold it on those aspects rather then as a horror. I wanted to see a good horror show. It was like ordering something described as the heartiest steak meal ever, and people could not finish eating it because it was so hearty, and then you get three sirloin tips lost in a huge beautiful salad. I wanted that awesome horror, but I got a salad insted.
