Has to be 7. Not really a contest, IMO. 2nd is 10. For me 3rd is Tactics, if that counts. Then tie between 5 & 6. Didn't really like the rest.
Yeah, I would have to say FF7 was my favorite .. everything about it was.. amazing. FF6 on SNES is also one of my favorites because of the storyline and how many characters you could use in the game. Final Fantasy Tactics is another one that I really enjoyed, even though its not really a final fantasy game.. . I find myself replaying over every now and then.
Weird...I actually just started up FFX for the first time and was thinking of making a thread like this. I would have to go with FF6 or FF7. It's tough for me to choose between the two. I'm actually planning on playing through each one again in the coming year, so maybe I'll be able to decide then. I will say that I pity those who got into Final Fantasy with FF7 and never went back to play FF6 because of its SNES graphics. If you enjoy the FF games and haven't played it yet, you really do need to pick it up. Please tell me why you chose FF4 as one of the best. I actually preferred it above FF6 for a while, believe it or not. However, I recently went back and replayed it and it really is a bad game by today's standards, mainly because the storyline is VASTLY overrated.
Well, the only ones I've played through are 7, 8, 10, X-2, and 12 so I'm going to have to exclude the really earlier ones. I guess I'm about the only person on Earth who's kinda "eh" about 7. It was a good game and the characters work, but something about it just doesn't... I don't know. I see it as a good game, but not "OMG! BEST EVAR!" about it. I liked 8 (still got a thing for Quistis) but I despised the junctioning and the card game. Still though, good enough. I consider X-2 an abomination that was made only in an attempt to bring in the tween girls. Twelve was another decent enough game, but Balthier was trying too hard to be as cool as Auron. Still though, I liked it. But to me, X was the best of the FFs I've played. Yes the voice acting was...mediocre in parts. But the battle system worked, blitzball was fun, the music was great, the characters were clearly defined (except maybe for Kihmari, but I hardly ever used him anyway) and the ending still brings a tear to my eye. Plus the opening FMV is still one of the best openings I've seen in a game. So, for me I guess it goes: X XII VIII VII X-2 Your mileage may vary.
The only thing that takes a while is pulling up the menu. I never notice anything else running slower then the SNES versions.
The last time I spent more than half an hour on an RPG was FFVII. I remember saying, "See, now this is why I hate RPG's" to my friend as I watched him pick from a drop down menu while the characters stood still and awaited his next attack. We were taking turns and I literally fell asleep before my next turn. I think the story lines appeal to anime fans, and while I am a fan of anime, I only watch for the action/artwork.
Blats! Are you importing FF13? It was released today in Japan. Grrrr I need a HDTV and a PS3 first then I would do it.
FWIW, I think most JRPGs (including FF) these days don't really follow that system anymore. There's generally a lot more action involved in the gameplay than 5-10 years ago. Still got some JRPGs that use the more traditional system, although they tend to use a lot more strategy than the older games. (I'm assuming by RPG, you meant JRPG. Most Western RPGs never really followed that system).
Cliche as it may be, gotta say VII. I have never played anything that managed to capture that "OH ****, this is EPIC" feeling quite as well as Final Fantasy 7.
Agree. I can understand it being viewed as overrated to some, but thats the one that really sucked me in. I almost cried over Aeris! Only game that ever did that.
I dunno... Xenogears may have it beaten in the "epic" category... come to think of it, I think the 3 Xenosagas as one continuous story do as well. Tough to think of a story more under-rated than Xenosaga.
Yeah, I know, but it's not just that. I've never really been that into story lines in games. If it isn't a first person shooter or fighting game the gameplay needs to be particularly innovative or engaging. The older I get, the pickier I get at what games I play.
