And your argument is flawed in that I never said that Unix was the whole reason that Macs were more secure. You even highlighted where I said so. As for points of vulnerability, a quick Google of "more secure vista os x" shows reports from Microsoft stating that Vista is more secure. That's like Obama showing up to a monster truck rally trying to convince people he isn't a Muslim. EDIT: Bad analogy. Point being that you can't exactly trust MS for touting their own product as the best option. HERE is a report refuting your point. If you want to delve deeper into that, be my guest, but I've got to run here in a bit and don't have time today. And Apple makes the fastest Vista laptop, for whatever that's worth. And Apple's market share has nearly tripled in the last ten years from 3-4% to ~10% or whatever it is. Have instances of viruses, spyware, and adware done the same? If they have, I'm unaware of it, but I've been on my XP laptop for several years now so I could have easily missed something. And as the first article I linked to states, they hold competitions to see who can hack/exploit the Mac OS. That's telling in and of itself, no?
Not about the user? That is apple's number one strong point, user experience. Mac, iPod, iPhone, these products sell because users like them. Every release of Windows rips off Mac OS features since ... ever? Look I use both, and find these arguments silly, but come on, I couldn't disagree with that point more. Aside from Hut's comments, which security wise has some very valid points, I just don't get the haters regarding mac. Don't like em? Don't BUY em. My God, all this "Those commercials are the sole reason I will never buy one of their products" crap is so freaking juvenile. Some of them are clever, some not so much... but isn't that advertising as a whole? The comparison really is somewhat flawed, in that Apple is a computer and software company, while MS has always been about software only. PCs 'took storm' so quickly in large part because Gates marketed to third party computer manufacturers, while Mac's put their OS on their own more expensive and proprietary hardware (which has usually touted more features and early adoption of technology... prevalent usb, firewire, integrated sound, whatever). It was marketing genius on Gate's part that made the windows OS the prevalent juggernaut that it has become. MS licensed the OS and took a percentage for every unit sold with it. It propagated quickly, and became the standard, while Apples products were proprietary and thus lacked compatibility, while generally providing a more streamlined experience for the most part due to integrated hardware and software controlled by one source. Yes, as they incorporated compatibility, their acceptance grew... go figure. Since MS has become the standard for reasons mentioned above, compatibility with the rest of the <strike>sheep</strike> world has become something that has helped people accept Apple as an alternative more and more. These days Windows will run natively on an Intel mac... probably doesn't hurt Mac sales OR windows sales. I personally use both, but I have always preferred the OS experience created by apple. That said, I see no reason to hate on windows... and it would certainly take more than an irritating (or successful, or whatever you want to call it) commercial for me to do so. It just seems to me that many windows users have some fear or phobia about the mac having any percentage of the market. Strange. Hard to imagine why so many love to hate on Apple, stereotyping and criticizing users... childish and pointless. Use what works for you. EOS. And for the record, their percentage is closer to 10% than 1%.
I also don't get the hate for Macs. I also prefer Pumas, but I don't hate people who wear Nike's or cheer for the company's downfall. I don't want to get into a debate, but I think there are some misconceptions to clear up. When it came time to buy a new computer I wanted to weigh ALL my options, test drove a Mac for 30 minutes, I decided to make the leap. True, I had some of the same perceptions as Pizza before I switched. Ultimately I found almost everything I did on a PC I can do on a Mac. The exceptions in my experience are developing in .NET (granted it's an MS platform) and watching sports on those Chinese P2P programs (which are not exactly legal in use anyways). I thought I would miss the power to tweak things, but after using a Mac for a year I realized OS X has many of the same abilities. The difference is less of the underlying tweaks are so exposed, but they're still there. If worse comes to worse you can fire up the terminal. The unix shell is as under-the-hood as you're going to get. It seems like many PC people gripe out the inability to tweak the UI, which seems to counter when Windows users ridicule OS X for being 'pretty'. I do agree w/ Pizza that Mac's don't have a stranglehold on media production anymore (audio/video/photo). For the most part it boils down to preference of the OS. I have a pretty serious audio production hobby, but I could easily do it on a PC if I wanted. (Actually I use Logic...but that's not really important here.) But I don't know why you would knock a Mac for ease of use. Linux users could use the same argument against Windows. Why is something easier to use a bad thing? BTW, I've worked in IT my whole career. I've had friends ask me about computer advice. I told them I loved my leap to the Mac, but they should test drive it first. I don't want someone pissed at me about their $1000+ purchase. They all ended up buying a Mac and wouldn't go back. This includes a robotics engineer, a CTO, and a DBA (database admin). Not exactly your 'stupid noob' computer users. I am willing to pay extra for what *I* consider better usability considering I spend all my time on computers. If you don't want to pay extra I totally understand. And if you genuinely like using Vista more than OS X, than it's a no brainer. Anyways, more and more stuff we do will be in the cloud so it won't matter.
THis thread seems more like an Apple bashing thread than anything. A lot of haters for no reason. Macs can run windows on them just like a PC can so anything related to not being able to run programs on a mac goes out the window. People buy certain products because they like them. So just because you dont like a product doesnt mean that its piece of crap. Im also tired of hearing comments about people buying apple computers because they are "trendy" and that if someone owns a mac then they think they are better than someone else. Stop hating on macs and get used to them, they aren't going away. Why don't some of you actually go buy a mac and use it with an open mind instead of just repeating something you read off the internet.
I love my mac. It runs as smooth as the first day I turned it on (after 2+ years), unlike the PCs that i've owned before it. Once you go mac, you don't go back. I don't give a crap about the commercials.
Always thought this was funny...although it's not true like some of the Apple commercials. I mean it's comparing an All-in-one with a full desktop PC, but still funny.
Agree 100%. My old laptop worked perfectly for over 4 years til recently when the logic board stopped working. I was hoping it would stop at some point cause I wanted the a new computer since mine was the iBook G4. In any case, I am never going back to a PC especially when i can run windows on a mac anyway. Buying a Mac computer was probably one of the best decisions I have made in the past 5 years. I hate the apple ads too but that is never going to stop me from buying another.
My Windows PC (Dell) runs just as well as it did 8 years ago when I got it. Why would I ever need to buy a mac when my Dell might well just survive the apocalypse?
Yeah funny thing is, it's like comparing different car manufacturers. They all do the same thing. Get you from A to B. PCs and Macs are just computers, changing 0s and 1s. It's just preference as to which one you buy, whether it's for looks, performance, reliability, or the perceived version of looks, performance, reliability, etc. And as someone said before, it's the OS's that are being compared, but Mac figures explaining that is too much for their target audience
There's another one someone made where they show a Mac & PC monitor side by side. The PC has COD4 and the Mac has something like Oregon Trail. I got a chuckle out of that one.
