Is this the new thing laid off teachers do out of desperation? Rob a bank just to get room and board in a cell? It's not a bad idea if you feel you have no other options I guess. I'd rather they pay a teacher to work versus paying to house them in a cell cause they robbed out of desperation. It costs more for the room and board in the cell versus what teachers actually make to live off of. That's the irony. Either pay the teacher to work on their breadcrumb salary...or pay even more to lock them up cause they robbed out of desperation due to homelessness from being laid off. I see how that works out.
It's 40 years because it is bank robbery. If he hit a gas station, the max wouldn't be so high. But, that's just the max. Given this guy's particular crime, he probably won't get anything near that. Still, if I wanted to get imprisoned to solve my housing problems, I don't think bank robbery is what I'd want to be convicted for. The potential for a very long sentence is too much risk for me. I'd rather do shorter sentences and have an option to renew with a new crime when I got out. But, robbing gas stations or liquor stores can get you killed. Maybe rob a shoe store or something?
Why is that UNREAL? I'm not saying neither committed a crime, but... the robber pretended to have a gun, probably scared the poop out of the people in the bank... why shouldn't he get time in the can?
Over half the country does... also, many teachers make more than that. Some have summer jobs, plus pension, etc.
Reading between the lines, I'm assuming you're in California. 45k is way more money in most other states.
