One of my great college memories was the night before the last classes one spring semester. We made a big old batch of Sangria and formed a circle around the vat and sang a very un-musical and raucous version of this song. ... time and time again. Such simple times and pleasures.
Come on, how can anyone forget this cheer-me-up classic. Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves Okay, I know it sucks, but Bailey didn't ask for quality
eeewwww... Well, the original version was OK (when I was a ten-year-old girl; I can't tolerate such things anymore). A relative had a female friend with a guitar sing this for the recessional at her wedding. It was horrible. I could barely watch. My cheer-me-up songs are kind of ironic: they involve some kind of catharsis (e.g. the singer at least understands what I'm feeling), and possibly an acknowledgement that times are tough but we're going to try to get through this. Bruce Springsteen - The Rising U2 - Walk On REM - The Lifting Metallica - Wherever I May Roam Red Hot Chili Peppers - Behind the Sun Catharsis songs: come from The Clash, as well as the first half of Counting Crows' "Recovering the Satellites". Some of them aren't exactly positive, though. One thing about music - different songs certainly do different things for different people.
My friend, I have the perfect solution for you. I made a mixed CD of feel-good happy songs that is guaranteed to lift anyone out of the depths of depression. Most of these won't be considered musical masterpieces, but they'll bring a smile to your face! Oh and I will add these 2 obscure songs: "Let's Groove Tonight" - Earth, Wind, and Fire "No Parking on the Dance Floor" - Midnight Star
Todd Rundgren can always cheer me up. Try "Runt. The Ballad of Todd Rundgren" or "Something/Anything" This isn't his Utopia phase... some great songs from '71 & '72. Glad to see some love for the Kinks, DEAN.

Wide selection of songs there! Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Some of them inspired me to get out CDs I hadn't listened to in years (like "1984" and "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan"). Here's a couple of my own choices: "Married With Children" - Oasis "Three Little Birds" - Bob Marley & The Wailers "Everyday Sunshine" - Fishbone "Today" - Smashing Pumpkins "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" - Jackie Wilson "Solace of You" - Living Colour "Going Underground" - The Jam "Yes" - McAlmont & Butler "Do Anything You Wanna Do" - Eddie And The Hit Rods "Liquidation Dub" - Sly & Robbie and embarrassingly... "Cherish" - Madonna "The Dam Busters March" (don't ask!)
I have to admit that when I first saw this thread this morning, I thought it was silly. Never really needed music to get me out of a down mood (im rarely in a down mood). However, in the last few days I have had to deal with the following: One of our cats is old and has chronic kidney failure and we are on the verge of having to put him down. We have another cat who has a sever infection in both eyes and is about to go blind. Rudy T is out for the rest of the season and the Rockets lost to the Lakers. This War is stressing me out and for some reason, every time I hear about one of our soliders getting killed, I take it really hard (get upset and down). On top of all that, I come to find out today that my wife has to have surgery within the next few days in order to save her pregnancy, plus, will have to be on strict bed rest for the next 5 mos. So needless to say, it has been a down day and decided to see if i could find some music to give me some pep. Lemme tell ya. On the radio comes "Stayin Alive" by the BGs. Man, I dont know what it was, but something hit me. So I decided to roll down my windows and crank it up bigtime and sign along (and animated I might add). All this while driving 70 MPH on 610. Needless to say I got some weird looks. However, I felt much better afterwards. Conclusion: I believe in the power of music more now than I ever had. PS - On the way home, I dropped by Wal Mart and bought the Stayin Alive CD, which is a collection of different artists performing the song.
The songs that make mae happy are: Love is all -Roger glover, especially with the video clip and: Always look on the bright side of life-monthy pyton
