That is an awesome choice. Toshiba's as a whole have been getting great reviews, and the i3 series is killer with battery life. If it makes you happy, then all is well. That i3 with that 12-cell should pull something like 9-14 hours of battery life right?...
Hum. I'm headed to my 3rd year of college and I was so sick of my desktop. I needed some convenience so I went laptop shopping myself. I've done a decent amount of research and my price range was exactly the same as yours. I've heard that intel is the way to go for a processor just because it doesn't get really hot like the AMDs. Intel has released a new set of chips i3, i5, i7. i3 is supposed to be ideal for the average college student because we don't need too much power, but it is still able to multitask. I ended up deciding between a sony vaio, an ASUS, and an Acer. I did some quick research on reliability and found a study that pointed towards ASUS as being the most reliable brand as far as laptops go. This is the particular laptop I purchased. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00352LQLW/ref=oss_product Spent a little over 700 for the laptop itself and did the Amazon Prime thing that gives free shipping to college students. So far I love it. Also, the keyboard is real nice. Much like a Mac's.
6 and a half actually. Not bad though. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba...lack/9703393.p?id=1218153394199&skuId=9703393 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba...Gray/9995257.p?id=1218206200206&skuId=9995257 It was between these two, but my Dad and I decided on the first one. Did some research, and overall it seems Intel is better.
Yea that was one of the thoughts that came up. It's not a big deal to me though. I'm currently on my Dad's laptop which is 16 inches, so I'm kinda used to it.
I agree with Xerobull, **** HP. I also highly recommend 14" as the max size. Every inch makes a big difference when you are lugging it around (that's what I said) to class, the library, grabbing a bite to eat, labs, apartments, across campus, etc.
Is it really that big of a difference? I never really thought about it, didn't think it was a big deal.
So Toshiba's generally rate pretty well? I'm retiring my Dell and been wanting to go with a VAIO but they seem to be a bit pricy, so been wondering if Toshiba should be the way to go..
My Dad got a Toshiba 9 years ago...it still runs. He finally decided to upgrade last year and this one hasn't caused any problems so far either, so we thought Toshiba was the way to go for me.
DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT purchase a macbook for college. I don't want to go on and on and list the reasons, but I'll leave you with this: my roommate had to purchase Windows Vista (yes, Vista aka the devil of OS's) and he went through the trouble of downloading it to his macbook just so he can access all the school related stuff. Imagine the joy of having to reboot and get on Vista every time you need to submit your assignment. As an aside, anyone anti-HP care to elaborate on why they're not fans? I've been an HP user throughout my young life and I never seemed to have any problems with it . I'm not defending it, I'm just curious because I'm about to upgrade to another HP.
I too don't see where the HP-resentment is coming from. I use an HP business notebook for work (8440w) which is damn reliable and built like a tank, not to mention it is incredibly powerful and a great bargain vs what you would get with an Apple or even Lenovo notebook.
I'd recommend going to Fry's and buying their 4 year extended warranty. They told me around 50% of laptops have some sort of major problem that needs repairing and this covers it. My family has had 6 laptops in my life, 4 of them have had a major problem (not my fault). (4 of them I got from Fry's) Out of those 4 I got 2 of them were free from Fry's because of the Warranty. So I believe that it is worthwhile to look into that.
I love Toshiba. As I said 4 of my computers have died (2 being HP, 2 being Dell), the 2 that didn't die were Toshibas. I love it. I feel it is much better made, doesn't overheat, and performs really well.
I figured I recommended Frys so I should show you 1: http://www.frys.com/product/6269670?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG This imo is a really good laptop for under $750. Warranty runs @ 1/4th the price of the comp I believe, but that would run you @ like $850.
Very, very nice laptop. My only concern would be the battery life. 3 and a half hours is a little too low for me. It's not horrible, but not great. Other than that, it's a really solid pick.
any opinions on msi laptops? i want to go with an affordable laptop with an i5 and i think this was the best i could find.. http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/541572/MSI-S6000-017US-156-LED-Backlit/#reviewTab not too sure about how good msi is though
get the Asus Bamboo on Amazon! right now if you buy it, you get it for 850, and also get a 150 dollar gift card. I just got it today, and I am loving it so far.
