We used to hang out with those guys back in the day -- this at some random party. I forgot his name -- he was cool, but his dreads were always funky (like his horn playing).
That's David Dove, who came into the band later. I went to school with three of the founding members of Sprawl -- Jeff Nunally, Nick Cooper and Matt Kelly the lead singer. Another guy named Dan was a founding member, but I never really knew him at Rice. They lived in what was referred to as "The Lexington House" where many ad hoc, after parties were held. Nick Cooper is probably the best drummer who I know personally. After Sprawl he started the Free Radicals. He was also very business savvy and was the producer behind many of the albums of that day...like the Axiom albums. His producing company was Rastaman Work Ethic. btw: Nunally and Bo Morris (a horns player who joined with David Dove) are huge Rockets fans, and I believe they are both lurkers of the GARM, especially around trade deadlines. I still go to Rockets games with them every time I visit. We were at Game 1/Portland last year with Dave2000, Kam and Naismith. Nunally is a great guy! Here's some other bands of the late '80s early '90s that I recall: Fab Motion/Blunt Cinco Dudes Toho Ehio Fleshmop De Schmogg Road Kings (rockabilly) King's X Sugar Shack Three Day Stubble (awesome Nerdcore music from HSPVA alum who moved to San Fran...something tells me B-Bob might remember these guys)
The girl I rode with to school used to listen to them every morning. You Never Call Me was probably my favorite song. One of my best friends currently plays in a band (Ashbury Keyes) with one of their former drummers. They both also used to play in another local band called Toy Subs.
What was the name of the band that always played at Yaga's on Richmond, late 80's? Kind of a reggae band with lots of horns. I swear every time we went to Yaga's they were playing and they had a big following.

Also, loved me some Sprawl.... also might ask Batman Jones about them, I think it was the singer who starred in his BlueFinger play a few years back. He teaches in Austin somewhere last i heard.
The Judy's! Sprawl! Bouffant Jellyfish! Pain Teens! The Mike Gunn! This thread is flashback-inducing... Haha! Dave Dove (in that Sprawl party pic) is/was a character. Pastor of Muppets! I had Jeff Nunally's ID to use as my fake ID for a couple years just before turning 21. Good times in Houston in the late 80s.

Thanks Heypartner for the the link and looks like I need to do some vinyl shopping for some of these local bands, thanks clutchfans!
Check out Nick Cooper's site. He was the drummer for Sprawl and produced many albums back then for other bands, too. I'm not sure if he still has albums to sell, but he'd be the one I check first, as would be unused. http://www.nickcooper.com/ In the Sprawl area, scroll down and get the Axiom album for a compilation of late '80/90s bands. http://www.nickcooper.com/sprawl.htm
