well...Im actually using Pro...but I understand what you mean...to be fair, Im using the Corp verion of XP Pro so I dont have to deal wirth activation......

but in this case...with all the hassles he has been having, i would probably also recommend a fresh install when upgrading.

    Cool cool,

I believe that even with XP Pro there is no activation required. Only the home edition requires you to activate.

Question? Do you work in a computer related field?

XP Pro requires activation too unless you have the Corporate edition (which is basically XP pro just without activation) you can corporate anywhere, if you know what I mean.

what components are you looking to remove? motherboard? or ram? if its ram and you have a new motherboard then your old ram might not be compatible with your new motherboard. when removing hardware from and old computer to a new one you don't really have to worry about drivers. Once you've installed all your parts, and then installed a fresh copy of windows xp on a formated hard drive, your computer will boot fine ( you don't have to worry about drivers for things like cpu, ram, hard drive, cd rom, motherboard etc.) just install a updated version of your video card driver and thats it

The Pro version i have always used never required activation. I guess i have been using Corprate versions for all my company computers.

Actually you have to worry about drivers for your MB. All the VIa Drivers and updated MB and IDE drivers that are on the web are very vital to a stable system. especially the VIA and updated chipset drivers.

oh yeah :D update your chipset drivers but don't use the ones that came with your motherboard (usually on a cd) they may have some newer ones on the web

Well the only thing I'll be using from my old computer is my HD so I guess I better reinstall. The only thing I really wanted to save was Kazaa Lite and Microsoft Visual C++. Kazaa Lite is no longer available to download and I sold my copy of Visual a little over a year ago. My friend says he has some kind of cracked version of XP and has installed it on several computers and it seems to work fine. I don't like that idea though, what do you think? I have found some XP OEM versions online for as low as $80 with shipping. Is there anything bad about OEM software?

Nope there is nothing wrong with OEM software. That means you don't get the packaging like the box etc.

You can also just buy the CD-Key and used a burned copy. All you really need is to pay for the liscence. But either way you can't go wrong with a OEM version.

As far as Kazaa, i believe i have the version on my computer at home that i could easily email to you if you would like. I used the 2.6 version that you can still download and there is no problem with that, other than the ads of course.

If you are a student you can really get the Visual C++ for cheap through your school or even places that cell them. Either way i have a copy of it. But honestly software is very cheap for students. All you have to do it stop by the computer labs or the book store and you can find it.

Here is one place for further reference when you want to buy software if you are a student. Of course check with your school too cuase they will be much cheaper sometimes.

As far as the place you found that is a good price for it as well. I don't know how much shipping will be but you can find that software here in houston OEM for about the same price of that one with shipping.

Bass Computers has it and i know a couple of other places like Axion do as well.

I would recommend you moving up the professional if you don't mind spending a bit more. You have more options than the home version does, but that depends on your preference and what you will do with the OS.

Hmm...R2K once told me that the difference between Home and Pro is one I probably won't see so I think I will be fine with plain old Home. What extra do you speak of?

more networking aspects i guess. That's about it depends on how much networking you are going to do with your systems. If your not, then you will be nice and fine with Home Edition.

Here is a link of all the exact differences between the two.

I have picked the ATI RADEON 9200se 128MB video card for my new computer. There are some updates I can add on that cost extra that I'm not sure if I need and here they are:

    1. Software for DVD playback player and a S cable. ($6.95 extra)

    2. Upgrade to 9200se with DVI option ($9.95 extra)

    3. Add DVI to SVGA Adapter ($15.95 extra)

    4. Upgrade to retail box ($9.95 extra)

Do I really need any of these upgrades?

heh...I would if I could find a freaking opening somewhere for a sysadmin/netadmin with strong *nix/Windows/hardware skills but with very little experience working for actual companies(been a independent consultant since 97)

    Pun,

the DVI to VGA adapter should come with the card(mine did)

and the software DVD player isnt really necessary since you can probably find better versions online.

DVI option is only if you have the monitor that needs it.

once again...retail box probably wont give you anything you really need other than manuals...

How can I tell if my monitor needs it? I have a 21 inch flat screen (not LCD). DVI to VGA is listed as an add on, do I need it?

You don't really need it, you can always use the VGA connection

your monitor will already have the VGA connection, and it may or may not have the DVI connection. Since you picked a 9200se then your video card will have both VGA and DVI connections. Check behind your monitor and see if you have one or both of these

the white one is DVI and the blue VGA

I have the blue one so I should be OK. Thanks. Now that I have all my parts ordered I just have to wait for them to come in. Then comes the construction.....

Oh yeah R2K, you once told me you had several hard drives in your PC. How do you run so many? I'm only going to have two because I only have 4 IDE hook ups. I have three spare hard drives and I would like to use all three but if all else fails I'll just sell on one eBay.
