Need for a "consistent, third scorer" overrated?

Teams need a third scorer for strategic reasons, not simply to shoot open shots. Having a third scorer who can create his own shot tends to give you favorable mismatches.

The problem with the current Rockets offense is that we still don't have a good solution for when teams play an extremely aggressive defense that traps the pick and roll and /or fronts Yao. This is the same basic problem that the Dream/Clyde team had vs the 94-96 Sonics, who overplayed Dream with a pseudo-illegal trapping defense. Unfortunately, that defense is now legal, making it even easier to stop Yao.

This kind of post-trapping defense requires the defense to have fast help defenders, who can quickly swing over for help against Yao's post. But such fast defenders also tend to be smaller and lighter, and they are vulnerable to being posted themselves. This is exactly how Barkley solved the problem for us. He abused Detlef Schrempf, who was often the guy assigned to double Dream. When Barkley posted, Kemp and their centers were too slow to effectively double Barkley.

If Bonzi or Scola can continue to improve in the post, this will partially solve the problem for us. It is also dependent on Yao becoming comfortable scoring off a kickout from one of them.

A consistent point guard doesnt make Battier or Head or James hit their open jumpers.

Hitting the open J will do far more to help the team than a consistent point guard.

u hit it on the point. EVERY analyst basically says the same thing. we need a guy who's able to create without tmac. that not only allows tmac to focus on scoring than facilitator, but that will help the team stays afloat when tmac is not on the floor.

if we had that guy (which could be stevie francis if he's in shape), that guy can penetrate and take over games for a lil bit (don't have to take it over like tmac) just so the defense can soften up on yao. then we can go to yao easier. or a guy that can draw the defense when we draw the pick and roll to give yao the ball.

again, if tmac is the ONLY playmaker on this team, we'll die without tmac for the most part. but tmac will also have too much responsibilities on his hands again.

we'll see. it's still early in the season. i still expect mike james/francis to take over that role eventually.
