What kind of skills did they expect you to learn?

You probably don't want to relay that story to any interviewer. I interpreted it as:

"Going into the job, I knew I would have to acquire a certain skill set, but since I was doing so much work, I thought they'd overlook the fact that I never learned said skills."

What industry are you working in? Have you acquired the skills? Is it possible to change industries?

My background is help desk/desktop/hardware support. They told me that this job involves me having to know server and networking administration, data security, back-up administration, etc. I have never done any of those things and I told them in my previous job that those were handled by higher level groups. They hired me on anyways. I learned as much as I can in those areas, but it wasn't enough for them. They expected me to pick up thoroughly within a 3 month process without any training by them.

Changing industries is a possibility, but I was also thinking of trying to focus more on desktop support positions. Another option is going back to school. I'm still up in the air.

Dude, that's tough. Good luck on the other end. I do agree with the other poster that it might still look bad in that most company expect you to learn on the job (i.e. on your own time). I've learned that Salaried position sometimes just means 16 hours a day, 7 days a week with no overtime :D .

I would not list the position on the job application / resume.

You can explain the employment gap as time off / vacation / family priorities / independent consulting.

I think with a background check they will find out of the 3 month gap. It's better if it's on the resume than not. I just want to cover my tracks if they find out I'm not eligible for rehire after I tell them I quit/position ended/laid off, etc.
