If you're applying to 40-60 programs, then you may not have as much flexibility as you'd think to go to the best places in the country. For most residencies, regardless of programs that are considered #1 in the country based on prestige, training, and research output (Mayo, Mass Gen etc) the undisputed hardest place to match into is probably UCSF. Take a gander why that is.

Do make a concerted effort to keep post-interview communications active on programs that you really want to match to. Let us know where you end up.

Thanks for your advice Spacemoth, I'll definitely keep that in mind and will take your advice on the post-interview stuff. What specialty are you in and are you a resident/attending?

I have been told that I am a very competitive applicant by several program directors (and per 2014 match outcomes) and have been advised to apply to 20 programs only. The average applicant that matched last year applied to 39 and received 19 interviews.

I'm applying to a few more residencies due to possible couple's match and the "perceived extreme increase" in EM competitiveness. Last year, some PDs estimated that 20-30% of applicants held half of the interviews and students have been advised to apply to more programs in general.

You keep that town out of your mouth. You hear me?

And the Applebee's smells like cigarettes because it's still legal to smoke at the bar there.

Detroit. I want all Millennials to go to Detroit. I'd even vote for a bill giving you free moving.

No idea, I think it's still far too speculative at this point.
