RT @StateStSports Breaking: Reports out of Dallas say Cam Newton will be suspended by NCAA in the next few hours!
I don't really know what to think. Part of me thinks that this is a smear campaign, the other part thinks there has be something there with all these reports. I guess we'll see.
And now... RT @finebaum: Spoke to Ian Fitzsimmons of ESPN Dallas, He IS NOT reporting that Cam Newton will be suspended in the next 3-4 hours. Crazy stuff going on.
Not really sure what's true or not, but I will say this: 1. On the report of academic cheating at Florida, both Newton and Chizik spent a lot of time defending him and saying it's irrelevant, it happened years ago, we won't talk about it, etc - but neither of them said it's untrue. 2. On the pay-for-play stuff, while it's all coming out in the media just recently, apparently MissState reported it to the NCAA in January, and they've been investigating for a while. In January, Newton was kind of irrelevant - no one knew he'd be this good, a Heisman contender, etc. So it seems like a lot work to smear a random kid who's never played I-A football yet. Both of those things tells me there's something substantive to it. Here's the latest: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5786315 Things like this: "I'm not going to confirm nor deny nothing that has been taking place," Cecil Newton said. Just sound sketchy.
This probably deserves its own thread. A poster at tigerdroppings has compiled posts, articles, and press releases that document in detail the going on's at the Athletic department at Auburn University. He takes care to explain in detail all the individuals involved and a fairly in depth timeline going back to Auburn's violations and NCAA punishment back in the 1990's. As he does state in this post, some of this information is from someone who got it from someone So some of the details maybe not be exaggerated, extrapolated, or off, but the overwhelming amount of information in regards to all the individuals involved lead to a great deal of credence to the rumors and accusations being presented. I feel that this poster deserves the credit for his work so I will only post the end summary snippet of his posts, and ask you to read the entire series of posts and even his links to sources/evidence to understand the bigger picture. Wow. One one of his points, it was something I was figuring as to why they continue to let him play as more and more come out. Might as well win the whole damn thing and let the chips fall where they may. Auburn could be in a world of s*** if it really goes up as high as it seems. Wonder if the NCAA would finally bust out with the SMU bomb again?
@AP_Top25 Breaking news: NCAA finds violation of rules by Cam Newton's father. However, NCAA declares Newton ELIGIBLE to play. NCAA found amateurism violation occurred & Auburn declared Newton ineligible Tuesday. School applied for reinstatement & it was granted.
I don't understand. Auburn declared him ineligible? And then asked the NCAA to make him eligible? Instead of just letting the NCAA do it if it was necessary?
They wanted it on paper that the NCAA has declared him eligible. Leaves no doubt that he can play this week.
The NCAA has ruled Cam Newton is eligible to play for Auburn after a decision by the organization's student-athlete reinstatement staff. Newton was declared ineligible on Monday after the NCAA concluded a violation of amateurism rules occurred when his father Cecil Newton solicited extra benefits during the recruiting process. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2010/12/auburn-cam-newton-ncaa-eligible/1
