This is exactly right - the problem is not with the BCS here. It's that the Big 12 chose a stupid way to break ties. In particular, they chose to use the BCS, which is affected by things like reputation, name recognition, when you lost, voter preferences, and non-conference games to break a tie within a conference.
It looks like it is not such a guarantee that Florida would jump Texas in the BCS with a win over Alabama. The computer polls really do not like the Gators. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footba...AlADEZ1C3Fmjm_JHWMmwfRo5nYcB?urn=ncaaf,125550
Can someone explain how some Nebraska kicker helped us get screwed. I hope OU gets killed in the national title game....again....
1. OU loses to Mizzou 2. Florida beats Bama If number 1 happens it is a guarantee, but if number 2 happens (which is likely) I am pretty sure Florida is too far behind in the computers to make up the difference. I think Texas has a 50/50 shot at the NC game. DD
That can't happen....and neither is as good as OU or Texas....they play in a much weaker conference. DD
There's no way they'll have an OU-UT title game.. no way. The SEC is weaker this year.. but not "much weaker". And shame on anyone who will be rooting against OU in the championship game.. try talking to some SEC kids for 5minutes and you'll be begging any Big 12 team to beat the hell out of them. EDIT: Just read the article.. interesting. But didn't Michigan get screwed like this a few years ago? How they were the second best team but lost to Ohio State and voters didn't want to see a re-match?
The people that write these articles don't seem to know basic math. For starters, Florida will jump Alabama in the computers - so that's one spot right there. Then, they'll likely jump Utah in most of the polls, and they are already ahead of Tech in half of them, so they'll net above them. Just look at how much OU moved up in the computers just from beating #12 OSU - Florida will get a similar jump. So you're looking at Florida at #3 or #4 in the computers. If Florida is a solid #2 in the polls, it would be virtually impossible for Texas to jump them. The only way this works is if Texas is getting a decent number of #1 or #2 votes in the polls. Florida (and probably OU) would have to win ugly for there to be any remote shot of this.
2008. Both positive and negative. Negative in what you say yesterday - but now, OU is out of the mix. So the Big 12 gets an at-large spot, and you have two possibilities: Texas and Texas Tech. Tech is ranked fairly close in the polls and computers, has an identical record, and a head-to-head win over Texas. But Texas will go to the BCS based on name name affiliation, losing earlier, and style points, ignoring the head-to-head. Sound familiar?
Major, I don't think playing Alabama improves their SOS that much.....at least compared to OUs and UTs..... Sure they will jump but they are a lot further behind than OU was.....I think it is at least 50/50 that UT stays above them. DD
Tech squeaked by in too many games this season. We deserve to be in third in the BCS polling, and it has ZERO to do with name recognition.
Plus you played two Division 1-AA schools. That doesn't do well for your SOS. Schedule harder games and win them.
Alabama is #3 in the computers - that will be a huge boost for them. UT will definitely stay ahead in the computers - but the problem is the computers are only worth 33%. Florida will be ahead in the polls. Who exactly is Florida going to be behind in the computers? They are #6 now - take out Alabama and they are number #5 for sure. They are already ahead of Tech (#4) in half the computers, so they'll likely jump Tech with the boost, putting them at #4. And they are also close to Utah in a number of polls, so they probably jump them. So Florida is somewhere between #3 and #4 in the computers. Do the math and you'll see Texas needs to get a lot of first or second place votes to have any remote shot in that scenario. If Texas is a definite #3 in the polls, then it can't work.
Or in this case the losing, national title-bound OU has its shot at Texas, and so Texas does not deserve a national title rematch? My head hurts.
