OFT. Still, a lot of Sonner fans this year are suddenly indifferent while a lot of UT fans care a lot when they didn't in the past. I suppose these are just the "dumb ones," but it sucks all the same.
I don't think many fans like the current system or think it's fair. I don't. The problem is that because the system is unfair, teams and fans are pushed to go out and vocalize their arguments even more because without such arguments, they are forgotten among the other one loss teams. Look at Tech for example. Tech is a solid team with one loss and, even though they played two 1-AA teams, had a great season. Yet some have them ranked below two loss Ohio State from a much weaker conference. It makes no sense. In the end when the argument here came down to UT and OU it seemed to me that had the results gone the other way, the UT argument of "you should have beaten us" is much more persuasive than the current argument of "you should have beaten Texas Tech." If it were Tech and Texas, it would be much more persuasive of Tech to say "you had your chance and you lost" than it would for UT to say "but you lost to OU."
when has the bcs affected the horns in a positive way? or hell, even in a negative way until this year? i can't remember if ut getting the rose bowl bid in '04 was a controversey or not, but i don't think it was.
There was controversy that year but nothing compared to this extent. No matter who you are, any person that is somewhat aware of the BCS knows that it isn't the best nor the fairest system. It happens every single season right on que. However, this year's Big 12 debacle seems to do more with the tie-breaker scenario than the actual BCS. All the other BCS-conferences decide tie-breakers different than the Big 12, not sure why we're different from everyone else.
Am I the ONLY Longhorn who is happy to just be in a BCS bowl this year? Hell, after looking at the schedule at the beginning of the year I chalked down at least 2 losses, maybe three after how we played last year. Colt played out of his mind this year, we have crap for a running game and we had a very young secondary. I'm mildly pissed we didn't make the Big 12 championship game but I'm happy with a January BCS bowl.
oh no, i'm very happy about it. i'm not necessarily that upset that ou passed them up either as it's obvious that ou is an outstanding team.
actually, in a handful of other conferences, this is exactly how it's done. see the WAC and SEC for example.
There was A LOT of controversy about it. We were set to go to the Cotton or Holiday bowl but Mack campaigned on behalf of UT and then in the last poll, the coaches put UT ahead of Cal. A lot of people were talking about it until Cal lost badly to Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl. 2005 was an example of a time where you wouldn't want a playoff. UT and USC were unanimous top 2 teams and would give the ultimate marquee matchup.
Oh well, I wanted OU to win Big 12 south. I got a gut feeling Mizzou is going to win since theyre playing in their favorable weather conditions and in Mizzouri/Kansas. I predict a 45-38 win for Mizzouri =)
mizzou just crapped the bed in their "favorable weather conditions" against kansas, who lost to OU by 2 TDs. OU will walk straight to the national championship game and get busted up for the 5th year in a row, while Texas beats their opponent and we have another split national championship. BCS = Betraying Common Sense
To be fair, that game was basically irrelevant and also not nearly as much of a home game as this weekend should be, given that KU is 20 miles from Arrowhead. Also, every team has bad luck from time to time. Tech beat Texas, but I don't think most people would expect them to do it again. Mizzou had a bad day in a throwaway game in a classic looking ahead situation. It's a bad sign, no doubt, but they should be better prepared this weekend.
Looking on the bright side, Colt is that much more likely to stay for next year to get a shot at the title/Heisman that he probably won't get this season. Pretty good chance Texas starts 2009 at #1 or 2 and unlike this year, we won't have to play catch-up (or an insane schedule).
But there was the preconception that OU was better than UT forcing us to fight back when we were once again equal at one loss.
i don't think that ou's preseason ranking has anything to do with why they're ahead of us now. it's all about 65-21.
There is a clear feeling in the media and fans in general that OU is the better side. It's probably warranted, as they look scary as hell on offense and in general have more talent than Texas. For the most part, ESPN and such have sided with Texas because of 45-35, but having the expectation of title contention and a high ranking to go with the results (hopefully) next year I think will give Texas a boost they sorely missed this year. In short, it can't hurt.
Yes, but Texas, OU, and Tech don't play in the WAC or the SEC. So their tiebreaker is not particularly relevant to how to break a tie in the Big 12. The Big 12 might move to that tiebreaker next year, and I agree that it makes more sense - but that's not the rules they have in place now, so there's no reason to expect them to use those rules for this season.
