Colt only goes if we get to and win the NCG this season. At that point, his stock wouldn't have much room to go any higher.

Do you mean the team that wins the national championship by "NC" phenom? Or just a player that plays in that game? Because I'm sure you would be wise enough to know that the NC isn't crowned until after the Heisman presentation. See Texas v. USC, 2005.

By your criteria, if OU and Florida make it, the Heisman will go to Tebow or Bradford. Both are great candidates. No complaints from me. I think McCoy has less to work with on his offense, but those aren't horrible candidates by any means.

Big arms doesn't necessarily mean you can throw deep.

EXCELLENT point....I usually like a QB who runs around talking **** to players on the team that is literally beating his ass.

At least there was one NFL prospect on that Burnet High School team, and it's not McGee....

QUESTION: Can he improve his stock next year? Is it probable?

If not .. . he should go

He is doing well . .. . and if this is his peek . . . he should not pass the opportunity. If he can do well enough next year to be a Lotto Pick . . .then he might think of staying . . . .

How well stocked is Texas . . . if the TEAM takes a step back
it will reflect badly on him too

As I mentioned before, if his biggest knock is his vertical passing game, he may have a shot at showing that next year. Our go to receiver, Quan Cosby, is a possession receiver (and will be graduating). Shipley's role in the NFL is probably also as a slot receiver. Meanwhile, Dan Buckner and Malcolm Williams both present big targets deep and should play bigger roles in this offense next year as a true sophomore and red-shirt sophomore.

If he wins a Heisman and a national championship though, there's not much left to prove.

Is the team expected to take a step-forward after losing a Heisman caliber QB?

I don't get your reasoning. Did it reflect badly on Vince? Like Vince, if Colt leaves this year, he will have left the program better than he found it, and that's all you can ask for. Yes, the thought most Longhorn fans had going into this year was that we were positioning ourselves for 2009 -- when 7/8 contributors on the OLine will return, our young secondary will be more experienced, and only losing 2 skill position players, with a stable of young receivers and backs waiting in the wings.

We have 2 quarterbacks behind him who have been with the program for awhile but have seen limited PT. As previously mentioned, we have a 5-star QB Garrett Gilbert coming in. Most were hoping for another year of Colt so we could red-shirt him, and then he'd take over the program for the next 3-4 years.

It sure worked out the last 2 times we red-shirted a QB.

Either way, this isn't going to be an LSU scenario -- our talent level next year is so strong across the board, and competent enough at QB without McCoy to win 10 games again. With Colt though, this team is contending for a National Championship again.

You must not watch much NFL action... have you seen the arms of starting QBs in the league? They mostly all have "chicken arms"!

Only the hefty Culpepper's of the league don't.

As helpful as this was, thacabbage, I too am curious as to the role of weight training when it comes to QB arm strength. What is it that allows QBs to throw those laser passes 40 yards downfield? Is it just the geometry of their bodies? Arm length, angles, ligament/tendon strength, etc? Because I recognize that weight training probably doesn't do much since the QBs that are annually criticised for having poor arm strength are always discussed as if there was nothing that could be done...but is there anything that CAN be done?

I think he HAS to go. I'm pretty sure his stock will never be as high as it is now and he'd take a BIG risk coming back and hoping for a year as good as he had this year.

He's probably pushed himself into being a first day draft pick which probably wan't in the cards before the year he had. If he doesn't go, he's risking more than he has to gain.

Not being a football player, I'm not really sure. But I imagine it's a lot like taking a pitcher who throws 80mph and saying that with strength/conditioning, he could throw 95mph. I'd guess it's more complex than just getting stronger. Even if you could make him stronger, does he lose the accuracy, etc?

I agree - if people decide he's a top 2 round pick, I think he has to look at going. He's had a terribly inconsistent career with a great first year, sketchy second year, and now a great third year. But even within this year, he's not playing at the level he was early/mid-season since he's been getting more pressure these last few weeks. He also takes a lot of punishment due to his running. If his O-Line or running game struggles next year, his stock could definitely drop. I don't see it going up much - the main thing that might come into play is what other QBs are coming out and what the prospect list for next year looks like.

If Chase Daniel is projected at best a 3rd rounder, I say Colt goes around 5th round. He doesnt play the pro system, he has some good running capability but that isnt as important as being able to make reads (which VY wasnt able to do when he got to pros) or being able to make zip throws. He has a decent arm but its not as good as other prospects such as Stafford or Bradford.

Put Joe Montana, Joe Namath or freaking Sammy Baugh behind the Texan's swiss cheese of an offensive line, and they would all suck donkey balls.

The entire O-Line (minus Dockery) will be back next season, and 3 of them will be seniors so I don't expect to see any drop off there. I think the running game really took a hit this season with the lost of J. Charles and Fozzy being hurt for the 1st half of the season. Losing Cosby will hurt but Shipley is expected to return and guys like Malcom Williams and Brandon Collins have really stepped up this year. Hopefully Irby can make a full recovery because that will give us a HUGE weapon that we missed this year.

Superbeekay - You do know that Mizzoue doesn't run a pro-style offense either right. I'm not sure where Daniels will actually go in the draft but I would bet right now that Colt would easily get picked before him. Daniels is probably a good 3 inches shorter than Colt and doesn't have anywhere near the mobility that Colt has. Daniels was probably the better prospect last year but this year he showed that he isn't as good as everyone thought he was.
