NC Lawmakers Push Bill to Allow for State Religion

I'm hoping for this to become law. It should be quite entertaining.

 

SECTION 1. The North Carolina General Assembly asserts that the Constitution of the United States of America does not prohibit states or their subsidiaries from making laws respecting an establishment of religion.

SECTION 2. The North Carolina General Assembly does not recognize federal court rulings which prohibit and otherwise regulate the State of North Carolina, its public schools or any political subdivisions of the State from making laws respecting an establishment of religion.

There was a time in this country where legislators who brought up dumb nonsense like this would then go on to lose the next primary election. Primaries used to be made up of the most informed voters. Today's Republican primaries are made up of the craziest voters.

We have an electoral system that rewards outlandish grandstanding like this instead of rewarding actually passing relevant legislation and governing.

Out in North Dakota (where I lived until recently), the government there is sitting on an ever growing surplus, refusing to actually do things like develop housing and infrastructure in the oil fields or developing permanent flood protection in Fargo (which is going to flood yet again in a week or two)

Instead just like in North Carolina, legislators get rewarded for grandstanding and passing unconstitutional laws like the recent abortion ban and the personhood amendment.

So, your party is losing power because of irrational ideas and extremist viewpoints ... and you think doubling down on the crazy is somehow going to help.

 

The local lawyers and judges'll have something to do, and the sponsoring legislators will do their county church tours and guest sermons, and lock up the 30 or so votes they need to get re-elected every other year.
