So basically it's Jones/Mason for Mashburn/Brown. Seems like a dead-even trade to me. Makes me wonder why they'd bother.

Dead-even? No way. Jones is considerably better than Mashburn, IMO, and is a much better all-round player. Mason-Brown is pretty even though.
Even though Miami gets the better deal, Charlotte at least has the consolidation that they got something for Eddie Jones, rather than nothing. I'm still shocked that the Hornets dealt Mase, inspite of the fact that they had gotten sick of his off-the-court exploits. He was the heart and soul of that team.

If this trade is true, then Miami has sure done a good job of "rebulding", as Riley had vowed.

    Jones
    -----
    20.1 ppg, 4.2 apg, 4.8 rpg

    Mashburn
    --------
    17.5 ppg, 3.9 apg, 5.0 rpg

Eddie and Jamal are very simlar players. Jones has the slight edge in points (and steals, obviously) but then again, Jones didn't have to play behind the #2 center in the league last season. It's really too bad for Miami. If they signed Jones through free agency, and had both him and Mashburn, they would have been big winners. With this trade, they still improve, but on a much smaller scale.

Miami now has Eddie Jones and Mourning to defend for them. That's some defense. They're much improved (especially if Riley can keep Mason fully interested).

Don't forget Miami also got Ricky Davis who has quite a bit of potential as well.
