They offered Clyde too!!!! I remember the #2 pick for Sampson being offered but don't remember Clyde being mentioned as part of the trade deal.
Yep. From what I heard, the deal on the table for Ralph Sampson was the #2 pick (which almost assuredly would have been Michael Jordan), Clyde Drexler AND Fat Lever (who was a terrific rebounding point guard). In today's terms, that would be like a team making a Godfather offer to the New Orleans Pelicans for Anthony Davis. You wouldn't blame the Pelicans for saying no to ANYTHING (no matter how enticing it sounds). Same could probably be said for the Rockets with Sampson back in 1984. (FYI, the top of the 1984 NBA Draft heading into the draft was very similar to the 2007 Draft. Akeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan were CLEARLY the top 2 talents in the draft, akin to Greg Oden (minus the injury concerns) and Kevin Durant in 2007. That is what makes Portland's selection of Sam Bowie at #2 all the more confounding. It would have been like Seattle taking Joakim Noah or Spencer Hawes over Durant, JUST because they needed a center.)
I think at one point Aldridge was gonna be traded for Ibaka and Harden. That would have been interesting.
Tmac for Vince carter before the micro fracture surgery. Yao Vince and artest with a budding brooks and Von wafer being good for us along with battier. Would have been nice.
Sampson was worth much more than a #2 pick. He was supposed to be the Player of the Century. #2 and Drexler would have been a fair trade. Drexler was just an athletic "raw" player in his rookie year.
