I think if Dwight leaves for NJ after the season, it is worse than what lebron did to the Cavs.

THe decision show was a disgrace, but Dwight is literally screwing the Magic by not getting compensation in return.

In the end, it is the front office's job to call his bluff and trade him anyways

Correct. And I hope the media rips him like they rip(ped) LeBron.

And if Orlando doesn't trade him because they're going to pray, wish, and hope he stays, well then they also get what's coming to them and I won't feel bad for them.

LOL at a free agent owing his old team anything. Fpr the old team to be entitled to something when a free agent leaves they have to be able to give something in return. If Dwight doesn't need what they have to offer that's just the breaks.

When did this notion of your old team getting something related to your unrestricted free agency come into play?

seriously there is no reason for the magic now to not trade him even if its to a team that wants him as a rental they will at least get something for nothing otherwise they will be left with a mess

i mean its better for them to get a borderline all-star type player (lowry/martin etc) and future picks and cap relief than nothing at all

Completely agree. This guy is as good as gone; get something for him (with the chance to shed one of your 'bad' contracts).

Howard doesn't owe the Magic anything. He doesn't want the Nets gutted when he gets there. How can you blame him for waiting to freely walk after the season is over. If Orlando really wants something in return then they'd find someone else to take the gamble on a 1 year rental and hope he stays with them.

That is assuming Howard isn't bluffing and is willing to sacrifice guaranteed money. Not good for league to have elite talents move around and destroy teams... At same time Orlando had years to rebuild around him, same with Cleveland and LeBron.

The answer as to why you don't trade him for mid-level stars:

GMs get fired when they make trades that are completely lopsided three years from now. Otis has a better chance of keeping his job if he can say, "Dwight didn't have it in him to stay in Orlando, he wanted the big lights of Brooklyn or LA."

Also, unless someone is taking Hedo AND giving you back $11+ mil in expirings, the easiest way to clear cap is to just let him walk.

People keep making it such a doomsday scenario if Dwight opts out and signs without ORL getting compensation..... but wouldn't they then be like 20 other teams in the NBA with some talent on their rosters but no superstar? Man.... I sure do pity them and their difficult road to the playoffs without Dwight with Atlanta, Charlotte, and Washington in their division....

They're not his old team, they're his team. He doesn't owe them anything come June, but right now he owes them a warm glass poof STFU. They're currently in deep playoff contention and could use some camaraderie.

I have to agree. In fact, props to Howard if it's true and he doesn't want the Nets to gut the team just so he can get the extra year and more money on his contract. He's a better man than Melo (which isn't saying much).

If the Magic don't trade him and get something in return, blame their own stupidity. They may as well go back to the Lakers and take Bynum straight-up. Without the Nets playing the trade game, they have no negotiating leverage on other teams.

You are thinking of the team, the business...we are thinkingof the fans, the fanbase who spent their hard earned money supporting him and welcoming dwight in to their cities family. For so many people in tough situation, they support their teams as an outlet and become attached to their playerS(lord knos we have so man homers hear who wouldn't want to trade our players for MJ even) So thats where peple are sying they screwed over, the loyal fans who would've welcomed dwight into their homes and voted him mayor if given a chance eveen

He's not a FA yet, though. He's still signed to the Magic.

Orlando needs to make a move quick. Dwight is so gone after the season is over.

i actually believe him in this case the money he could earn from being in brooklyn is crazy through endorsements alone. Adidas gave over 200 million to rose and Howard is their other marquee player and him being in the media capital of the world that next shoe contract or extension for howard is going to be huge - more than making up for the difference in the money he could have made by resigning with orlando.

add in also that there are probably of other endorsements he would be getting and being in NY would help him become an even bigger global icon

plus with the nets doing so bad and possibly having 2 first round picks (if the rockets make the playoffs) you're looking a possibly getting a top 3 pick followed by a teen pick (getting a solid bench player) which would make the nets roster scary good especially if they dont have to lose anyone to get howard. I think more vet role players (battier etc) would be more likely to go to brooklyn to place with one of the best PG (IMO top 2) and the best center in the league.

it makes all the sense in the world -- part of me would applaud dwight for leaving contract money on the table since no player has really done that in their prime - a significant amount that is -- and he would be the first to sort of put his money where his mouth is but at the same time he really wouldnt be losing out on too much overall.

Another thing about rose is he didn't just get it because of chicago and a big market. Smaller guys are more relateable. We feel like we can play more like them or relate to them more than the freak of nature 7 footer. So it is just a matter of marketability. Howard could stand to make more, but hell never touch rose's figures, no big man will. Yao obviously was an anomoly bc of china

I understand what you are saying, and there is logic to it. However the endorsement money is a given, ultimately he is still giving up many millions of dollars and very few give up that kind of money in their prime. He is the best of a horrific group of centers, but will debate how good he actually is. He is not handling this situation at all. I think he wants to be dealt to NJ for the money, but does not want to be the bad guy. Now, I'd they do trade him he can always say he told them to not trade him.

And how many fans shed a tear when we shipped out Aaron Brooks? Aaron Red Suit Brooks who led us in that playoff run only to lose his starting job due to injuries on a contract year? Did we not let Chuck Hayes sign with the Kings for the chance to sign Gasol? Did we not ship out Steve Francis for McGrady?

Talk all you want about whether it was a good basket ball move or not, those guys bled Rockets red before they were gone. Good guys, maybe not the best talent but they gave their all to this team and on the court. But it's a business and fans care about wins of the team over the bond with individual players. Let's not hold the players to a higher standard.
