Thank you! Can't believe it took so long for someone to point this out. First thing I think of for records that won't be duplicated.
While Davis is still young, the most assists he has ever had in a game is 5 (once). He has had a handful of games with 4 and most of his games in his career have been less than 2. (H)akeem routinely had games with 4+ assists in his first 3 seasons.
*Averaging a triple double in one season, while averaging at least 25 or ppg. * Never fouling out of game (Wilt Chamberlain), while practically playing 45 minutes per game. -- Averaging 20+ ppg and 20+ rebs.
Mark Price held the NBA record for best career FT% until Nash barely passed him. They are the only two players in history with a career % over 90%, at exactly 90%. However, neither of them has had a season over 95%, only 5 players have. and neither were anywhere close to the consecutive FTM record. That's why I think Calderon's 98% record for a season will be very hard to break, and Micheal Williams 97 FTs made in a row that has lasted for 22 years is quite impressive as well.
While Wilt is undeniably a player who would be a multi-MVP in any era, does anyone else look at his stats and think of Cy Young. No one is going to break Cy Young's 500 wins. Also, no one is going to break Cy Young's 300 losses, either. So, the question isn't how great he was, but rather his stats are ridiculous in a boring way. It makes a mockery of the history of stats, like Cy Young did. If Wilt's stats are so true, then no one would ever argue against him being the GOAT, yet very very few people consider him the GOAT. And many (from all eras) don't even consider him best center ever.
too far removed from the present game. if you hear from people that actually saw him play they acknowledge he'd still dominate today's game. people see him as a myth, and don't recognize his accomplishments for what they were. jordan is recent enough for everyone to reference.
yeah, I don't mean to make this a tangent about GOAT, but rather his stats render this thread somewhat boring. That's why I posted FT records. Wilt can't beat that....oops, except for most in a season. cy .
The year Wilt set that record, the average team got 73 rebounds per game. Now it's 43. Wilt could never duplicate those stats today, even if he was just as dominant.
