If Shaq used PEDs to help him recover from injuries, wouldn't he have averaged more than like 65 games a year during his prime? He's always been big, so I really doubt he would use them to bulk up.

For anyone who didn't click the link he tested positive for DHEA which is an over-the-counter supplement that may or may not result in the production of higher levels of testosterone. Still, it is on the league's list of banned substances but it is only a supplement and not one that I have ever heard of being noticeably effective for people in their 20s or 30s.

One wonders if Rashard tested positive for a real anabolic steroid but was able to produce a bottle of DHEA to soften the public relations blow. Similar to Mark McGuire using androstene to mask his alleged steroid use.

Totally depends on what kind of DHEA it was. If it is just DHEA it can boost both testosterone and estrogen. Unless he was taking Keto-7 which is a derivative of DHEA that is not converted into said hormones and has the same effects. It's produced primarily in the adrenal glands and many doctors feel like supplementing it helps prevent many diseases, such as cancer, arterial disease, multiple sclerosis to name a few. Most people don't really need to use it until their forties but I know quite a few gym rats that take it and have had alot of success with it building muscle and burning fat

Would not be surprised if LeBron, Wade, Dwight and many others are on something. We have never seen athletes like this. I don't think its all just modern sports medicine. They way LeBron runs and his weight, that's just unreal.

That's what I wonder as well. That's actually an appealing aspect of steroids, if you get caught you can just say it was over the counter stuff.

Compare that with HGH or something similarly advanced, while the stuff is undetectable by the tests these leagues run, once your supplier gets caught or your name gets leaked. You are 100% guilty, there's no playing it off, well I guess there's the Bonds/Clemens defense: I didn't know what all that stuff my trainer rubbed on me was, I thought i was lotion....

The article doesn't explicitly say that he tested positive for DHEA though, does it?

I dont have a problem with Peds as long as the athletes are being supervised by trainers who understand the drugs that are being taken.

Peds when take properly and under supervision or no more dangerous then any other drug.

Some probably do. However, I don't care...just like I don't care about NFL players taking roids.

I figure the majority of NFL players are on them, and have been for a couple of decades. Doesn't bother me a bit...I don't care if the best left tackle of all time was roiding his whole career...in football individual records are not nearly as big of a deal as in baseball (same with hoops)

I do care about MLB PED's, though. Baseball records are such a big deal (same with stats) and gaining 10-15 pounds of muscle is the difference between a home run/double and a pop fly...same with getting 5-8 extra mph on your fastball.

Baseball seems so much more individual (you bat alone, you pitch alone somewhat) and cheating bothers me a lot more when it comes to baseball.

Totally hypocritical, I know, but it's just how I feel

Jose Canseco, the poster boy of steroid use in pro sports, averaged only 111 games per season for his career. I don't think injuries like Shaq's(Overuse injuries to the toes) could be cured by bulking up with steroids, in fact, that could be the cause.

There are plenty of people that have the same view, they don't care about NFL guys but do care about MLB.

I think it's because there are lots of MLB guys that look very ordinary, where as NFL guys look like gladiators. By that logic people aren't going to be bothered by PEDs in the NBA. One major argument against PEDs in baseball is that it makes little leaguers want to use drugs in order to be big league players. You can't say that about the NBA, you can take all the drugs you want and still won't make the NBA unless you are already athletically gifted.

Here's a good Truehoop article about the subject, published after the Rashard Lewis incident:

But that's not the problem. The problem is that PEDs increase performance and is considered cheating.

Well lots of things increase performance, PEDs are illegal because they are considered dangerous to your body.

You are right about the cheating, that's why I don't have a problem with MLB guys doing it, if everyone is doing it, then it isn't cheating.
