I love the 2K series and won't go against it. Does anyone know when it is hitting stores? I read somewhere Oct. 22 but haven't seen much info on the release date. Man, those of you saying you are going to get both Live and 2k are lucky. Must be nice to spend over 100.00 on games.
ESPN preview Someone over at developer Visual Concepts must be a fan of Dominique. You see, almost every move in NBA 2K4 seems to be a highlight. There are no chest passes, just passes behind the back, over the head, and one-handed lobs that turn into alley-oops. Players don't just walk down court, they strut. Blocks are swats, steals are swipes, and fast breaks have turned from the cluster of bodies in the paint to choreographed dances of dazzle and dunks. The biggest complaint Sega heard from ballers, not just in their NBA series, but across all sports games, is that the games were too sim heavy and lacked certain elements of fun. NBA 2K4 answers those complaints with a sense of style and panache loud enough to silence even the biggest mouths in the bunch. Why would they change a game so drastically in the gameplay area when it has been the most popular basketball game for several years? From this preview, it looks closer to NBA Jam than real basketball. Maybe the game needed a higher tempo...but I hope they didn't take it too far.
I never liked the "sim" feel of the 2K series, but it does sound like that have tricked it out too much.
Anyone see the 10-man freestyle tutorial up on EA's NBA Live site? The last trailer has Stevie in the Retro dunking and then there's Kobe going for a dunk only to get rejected by Yao (Sick!). http://www.easports.com/games/nbalive2004/downloads.jsp Also, NBA Live actually kills the 2K series in sales but I like many feel that the 2K series is much better. I liked how the Sega game was more realistic then Live, hope they didn't go overboard. Lastly, I think the game will be in stores on 10/15. I called a few stores in NY and they all told me 10/15.
Madden by far is the best Football game out there. Football is the category of sports games that EA owns. NCAA and Madden rock. Though I don't see what this has to do with? Football and basketball are WAY different. There is no comparison. I agree. Last year when Live came out i went to BlockBuster to rent it, and when I got home I realized I grabbed the wrong game. I got NBS2k, I tried it out to see if it was anygood, but after playing it for about an hour I got tired of it, never seemed fun. So I went back to BB and told them what happened and I got NBA Live, and then I played that till it was due. Then I went and bought it. There are many things from LIVE2003 that I want fixed and hope that they have fixed them. Such as blocks flying out of bounds, computer making me miss wide open dunks/layups, and the computer's defenders having the ability to make me stick to them while i am trying to drive by them. I will try both this year. I will buy one, then get a copy of the other.
Man, I read this thread WAY too late. I use to be a fan of NBA Live, but I then played NBA 2k2, after playing Live 01 and 02, and switched the following year with 2K3. Chances are, I'll be getting 2K4 as well...or ESPN basketball. Whatever you want to call it. I REALLY like sim games, so the 2K series really appealed to me. For the people that said they didn't like the sim feel, did you ever try changing the game sliders so that there would be more dunks, blocks, etc.? I don't know if it would still be like the Live series, but it could help. Personally, I love the sliders. If I feel as though there are too many layups, increase the dunk rating and then Moochie Norris is dunking...ok...maybe not, but he can grab the rim. I haven't spent that much time researching the new game, but it sounds pretty cool from what I hear. They got a new feature called IsoMotion which is basically like the freestyle thing found in Live. I read that it involves timing and stuff, kind of similar to Virtual Fighter in a way. I read something about the passes too, but I forgot about how that works. (fail to time something right while driving the lane, get a charge. Do it right, and then you can spin out of the way and get a layup). Also heard about a 24/7 mode, which is like is like Animal Crossing meets NBA street, I think. The game uses a clock and the more you play with your "baller," the better he gets. Plus, you get some cool prizes. I want to say you can put them on real teams, but I'm not so sure. However it works, it sounds like it can add some replayability to the game. As for the franchise, my personal favorite, I hear you can now hire assistant coaches and scouts to help the team. The ESPN overlay thing looks REALLY COOL. I believe Tom Tolbert and somebody else do the commentating, plus the guy at the ESPN desk. (forgot his too.) I wouldn't mind a little more flash, but I hope it stay relatively the same. I've played the game off and on by myself a lot over the past year, and it really hasn't gotten that old. I'll probably rent it to make sure it doesn't suck, immediately turn it back in and maybe get a dollar or so back if I'm lucky, get money for NBA2K3 and get the new one. BTW, did ESPN Basketball ever show the jerseys PRIOR to the Rockets? Just curious if they kept the secret or not.
im peeved that i only have a gamecube at this point. very very peeved. id definitely get ESPN over live but my choices are somewhat limited on this limited limited system. im gonna go play zelda now
I dont think so. I recall the only games that did was NBA Jam, which was understandable cause the game came out at the end of Sep, and NBA Live, which a bunch of threads were created in the GARM section.
Those were some great clips munco but I noticed one problem. In the Yao clip he is wearing last years jersey. Why is he not wearing the new uni's? I would think from all the other screens we've seen they would have the new jerseys in the game.
i'm sure the new unis will be in the game. i think it's not too difficult for them to change. man, i have tues. off from work but it looks like the stores won't have the game til wed.
here is a screen of EPSN NBA Basketball [2k4] with the new uniforms so you guys can relax... don't give into that EA marketing crap. In Baskeball, there is no better game than Sega's www.espnvideogames.com
wow, nba live looks totally different in these videos. they haven't been able to fix their players on rollerskates problem in like 5 years but this could be promising.
Well I think I'll get a couple of new games this week. One is football. It was either NCAA or Madden. I think I'll go with NCAA. Now I have to decide about basketball.
I went to GAME STOP yesterday and reserved a copy of ESPN NBA2k4. It comes out October 22. NBA Live is coming out October 14 for those who prefer that one. I can't wait for the 22nd.
Dude, do you work for Sega? Good God man, all you do is rip on Live which is funny as hell considering you haven't even seen this year's version.
Yeah! How funny! OMG HILARIOUS!!!!! It's a Chevy vs. Ford debate. For years and years the Fords have sucked compared to the Chevys. (No one jump in and start some dumb truck debate here, I'm just using this hypothetically) So you say that next year's Chevy will be better than the Ford. Doesn't sound like too much of a stretch to me! And there's TONS of people who will back me up in saying that NBA Live is a whopping turd compared to the 2K/ESPN basketball series.
