If they really wanted to make it latin night, players should wear baja poncho hoodies for warmup jackets, and traditional mexican ponchos for the shooting shirts. Dancers use maracas instead of pompoms...
In fairness, all the sports and every major company tries worldwide expansion. The NFL had the World League/NFL Europe. They've had games in Mexico for decades. All entertainment industries like movies and music is about getting as big an audience as possible. For me its more HOW the NBA does it, similar how Yoyo is describing it. Nothing inherently wrong with going global or a having culture themed nights. Just, dont make it look dumb The NBA how they have dress codes for the players, enough said.
It's really hard to knock the NBA because they're at least trying, but yeah, when the word "LOS" is clumsily stitched above the word "SPURS", it doesn't look like they're trying at all. And I know "Spurs" and "Heat" and "Suns" are proper names, but is just looks awkward. The SF Gigantes are the only pro franchise to my knowledge who do it the right way.
The NBA has a lot of marketing towards Latin America especially Mexico, the first regular season game of the NBA outside US and Canada was in Mexico city (Mavs - Rockets). In this article http://www.nba.com/2010/news/features/art_garcia/03/05/noche.QA/index.html explains a lot about the Noche Latina, it says: "Hispanics make up 15 percent of the NBA's fan base -- a larger proportion than any other major U.S. professional sport." So thats why the do the Noche Latina events because its a huge market for the NBA. but yeah I agree about is dumb about the "Los rockets" or "El Heat" in the jerseys, you are celebrating Noche Latina, no Spanglish night.
oh yeah, that's a completely new rant right there. cause on top of that... http://store.nba.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3834592&cp=3854284 neither ene nor be should even have accents!
I agree it's stupid. If it's going to be "latin night" shouldn't the name of the team be in spanish, rather than just the "los"?
Seriously. A more authentic Latin name for our team would be the Houston Barco Para Lanzar Proyectiles.
I like Noche Latina. I want one of the Los Rockets Jerseys. I do think they should translate the whole name however. It would look better.
Does the nbs really think its gonna get a bigger latino audience by putting los in front of everything? I understand the rockets promo where you could meet with scola, but really?
it's nearly as bad as if they allowed Telemundo do broadcast of actual games..............oh yeah........... <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/91QxTY3Lwio&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/91QxTY3Lwio&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Why do they use the term Latin? You're excluding Spain. It should be Hispanic Nights. And yes, adding LOS or EL to the jersey is a very lazy attempt at trying to reach out to the hispanic community in the US.
