[NBA Finals] Do you think the officiating is rigged?

Discussion in 'NBA Dish' started by RedRedemption, Jun 5, 2011.

?

Are the referees one-sided in this series?

  1. Yes - Stern just wants to prolong the series to generate $$$.

    49.6%
  2. No - Referees are just a bunch of stupid, incompetent morons.

    41.6%
  3. No - All the calls were justified.

I know I'd scream bloody murder, and have, if it happens to the Rockets. But really, I doubt anything is actually rigged. And I don't think the refs are completely incompetent either. Basketball is one of the most difficult sports to officiate because of it's fast pace and the level of subjectivity in having to make foul calls. Sometimes the refs can be pretty bad, sometimes good, and almost all the time they favor the home team, which is what has been happening this series. And it's not like every call went in Dallas' favor last night.

Your logic doesn't make sense. The result of the game should be about the performances of the PLAYERS, not of the REFEREES.

The mistakes made by players are part of their performance and therefore is by definition part of the game.

The mistakes made by the refs distort players performance therefore make the game less than what it should be.

No, basketball is not the toughest sport to officiate. You have 10 players and 3 refs on a 94 foot court. Soccer fields are 120 yards long and you have 22 players, 1 ref, and two linesmen. Soccer has had it's bad share of officiating, because it's the toughest sport to officiate. However, the level of poor officiating in the NBA is inexcusable and it's not a new problem. Three men should be able to ref 10 players on a 94 foot court consistently well. Instead the refs play favorites, they're highly inconsistent, sometimes they are just flat out incompetent, and some have huge egos and think the game is about them, and they've apparently received instructions from higher-ups in the past to prolong series due to tv ratings and for increased revenue. Thus, there's an element of corruption involved as well. It's an issue the league has refused to address, which leads to threads like this. International refs who don't play favorites, who won't let a superstar get away with a travel while, at the same time, calling it on a role player, and who will be more objective than the current refs in the NBA should be brought in. But, then again, Stern would have less power over these referees.

Fans outcry about officiating actually might make a difference. Notice all the traveling calls on LeBron this series? It's as if they are trying to do makeup calls for all the missed calls in the past on LeBron's traveling.

Agreed. The officiating leaning towards Dallas makes it even sweeter that they are down 1-2. Hopefully they go down 1-3 tonight...

If the officiating were rigged in game 2, Dallas would have never been down by 15. Why don't you guys go back and watch game 2 and see how it got to where it got.

That's a really poor argument. The officiating was clearly biased in Dallas' favor in game 3, yet the Heat still built a double digit lead in the third quarter of that game.

Game 4 I saw Dirk having a lot of contact by Miami players, and not a lot of calls.
