That lineup is still undersized. You have to keep in mind there are 3 teams in the west superior to the Rockets. And those 3 teams have more size.

That actually may not be a bad comparison. Another guy that comes to mind for me is Rex Chapman. Both those guys wre very good scorers - not great or all-star, but perfect role players.

My concerns with J.J. - which I think are echoed by many here - are these:

    1) Upside potential. At pick #8, you CAN get the next Amare, Kobe, KG, D. Wade, Joe Johnson, Richard Jefferson, Troy Murphy, etc. - players who are either great, or have more upside than JJ should ever have.

    2) Defense. Perimeter defense has always been a problem for the Rockets. It's hard to see how adding JJ doesn't hurt that.

    3) Value. It seems pretty clear that, at least RIGHT NOW, JJ's values is not the #8 pick. It probably isn't even in the top #15. This isn't a Bush/Mario Williams thing - had the Texans traded down anywhere below pick #2 they would have lost both Mario and Bush. But you can't make a reach at #8 if the player you chose wouldn't be going until much later anyway.

Then there are some who don't think JJ's game translates at all into the NBA...too small for a SG, not enough PG experience for a PG, not athletic enough, etc., etc. They may be valid points. Maybe race is playing a role.

Unless it becomes clear that JJ is good value at that pick, the only way the Rockets should take him is if they trade for him if they really want him. Maybe you trade Luther plus a future second round pick for Chicago's second pick (#16)...something like that.

What does JJ stand for anyway? Jboki Jnachbar? I'm going to get worried if he comes in and shoots "light out" at the workout.

If I was convinced he could be another Horny or Rex Chapman I'd be all for them trading down to select him, but I'm afraid he'll be closer to Trajan Langdon.

Am I the only one having a hard time believing that Foye will be drafted by the rockets? The kid is obviously talented and I think he will make a good pro, however, it just seems like another undersized guard is not what the rockets need. Then again, one could argue that the rockets need offense and he certainly brings that.

Is it possibly a smoke screen to either lure someone into trading with the rockets b/c a certain team wants Foye OR is it to prevent another team from leapfrogging the rockets to get a player that the rox want...I love the strategy of drafts.

P.S.. First post (obviously). I'm reasonable and like to play devils advocate, so don't get all mad if I push you to defend your position. Also, I don't have a lot of patience when it comes to stupid posts with no real substance (e.g. trade howard/swift for bosh. Blind coach/player bashing. etc )

Since we don't know what player the Rockets covet, or whether they're satisfied with who might be available at #8, let me just throw in my own speculation:

Many of the teams drafting ahead of us need veterans rather than rooks. Atlanta is one of those teams.

Now, IF it's true that the Hawks are high on Shelden Williams (which makes sense, although who knows what sort of disinformation is being pumped out there?), the best scenario for us might be to trade Rafer or Luther and the #8 for Atlanta's #5.

Atlanta could play Rafer as point or Luther could be PG defense, SG offense next to JJ, and they could get Shelden at #8.

That would likely net us Brandon Roy, who will not drop to the #8.

Roy can play 2/1, just as T-Mac can play 3/2/1. See if Mike James will accept the MLE. See about trading Swift and Vasilinis Spoogalotuckus for Padgett, Boki, and the 22 and 23 picks. Fill in needs with those picks.

I saw a mock draft this morning that had the Rockets picking Adam Morrison with the 8th pick. I'd be ecstatic if he was there at 8 and we got him.

That's a little too much faith in a management that hasn't reached the 2nd round of the playoffs in a decade.

I didn't trust them before JVG was here. With JVG here, I think we're making good decisions.

Head was JVG's first pick. And it was a pretty impressive pick. Before JVG years, Rudy was at the helm.

False and true, sort of. Find one JVG quote that says he's not disinterested in college basketball, and the draft, or ever being a GM and hordes of people here will enlighten you.

There's a lot of JVG's shtick I respect because it's real, but that doesn't have a damn thing to to do with honesty. That's actually meant as a compliment to JVG.

We have been burned on almost every draft pick and FA signing over the last seven years. But you really should remember this: The Rockets are a lucky franchise and unfortunately the basketball gods frown upon us when we're happy.

Though they do make sure that we routinely have the best center in the game...

I think we have a serviceable PG in Rafer...backup with Vassilis Spanoulis.

I believe it is more difficult to find a lengthy wingman like Rodney Carney who I believe has a lot of upside. TMac has said the guy can shoot, we know he is athletic as heck, and the fact that he has been worckking out in Tmacs home all summer shows some dedication. I really like this kid. We still have enough in the trade exception to potentially package something together maybe even includint the 2nd round pick to get a good SG. Or get one in the draft. ALL THIS IS BEING SAID ASSUMING BRANDON ROY IS GONE...IF HE IS THERE....HES THE OBVIOUS CHOICE.

    PG Rafer, V Span
    SG ????
    SF Tmac, Carney
PF Buy one get one free, Stro
    C Yao, Deke

I highly doubt Spanoulis is coming over this year.
