I thought Marc Ecko was black and I figured well surely another black man wouldn't put an asterisk on the ball.

It's still funny as hell. All the white people are like no no, Barry's terrible. While all of the black community is like Barry's innocent.

Of course I'm part of the white crowd. Maybe that makes me racist. Either way, it's hilarious. :)

idk, it all boils down to the fact that marc echo bought the ball and he has possession of it now. what he intends to do with it is his perogative isn't it? i'm not condonning what he plans to do with it but he should be able to put an astrerick on it if he wants to right? idk i dont really like baseball.. sue me.

I agree with Gilberto - the whole thing seems incredibly petty and lame.

Do you think every home run ball from 1990-2005 should be branded if it is displayed? If so, why or why not?

why? because you disagree with him? And the majority of the people that voted?

lol.. the public... did anyone from this site vote? who conducted the poll? did they check IP addresses for duplicates.?

this makes absolutely no sense... a third party with absolutely nothing to do with MLB jumps in for publicity purposes and decides to put an asterisk on the ball before "donating" it to the HOF...

good for gilbert for trying to do the right thing...

That would be overkill, probably. Personally, I wouldn't have a big problem with it, though I think I'm in the minority on that.

Putting the asterisk on this particular baseball is more of a symbolic gesture, and I think it's appropriate. I did vote for the first poll option, however, so I think Ecko should do whatever the hell he wants with it. Sending it into space would have been more entertaining.

I don't really care much about baseball unless the 'stros are in the playoffs, so I could care less about the stupid ball. If anything, I'd vote for Ecko to buy it, put an asterisk on the ball, and give it to me so I can make some money off of it.

No knock on Gilbert, he's just stating his opinion.. that's what blogs are for, right? It's actually a little entertaining.

Hypothetically, if Pete Rose (or Shoeless Joe, if you prefer) were to have his ban lifted and made it into the Hall of Fame, should the gambling part of his life go on his plaque?

That's different. The reason Bonds broke the home run record is directly tied to the steroids. The two are inseparable. If you asked should an asterisk go on his HOF plaque, I'd say no. He was a HOF-caliber player before the steroids.

the asterisk means absolutely nothing... i dont see how people can justify an outside party stamping a symbol on something on somehow it makes it legitimate?

there is no asterisk if ecko didnt buy the ball... if the kid donated the ball to the HOF it would have no asterisk...

a millionaire buying something and stamping it doesnt make it a part of history... it might as well be the ecko logo, cause all this is is publicity for ecko

I voted, and there was a thread on the Hangout, telling about a page where you went to vote. Here it is the page where the poll was, now has the results on it.

i had never heard of this poll until after the results were in... I didnt even know Ecko was involved in the bidding process until after his little publicity stunt... I dont trust polls by CNN, ABC, or Zogby... theres no way in hell I am trusting a poll conducted by Mark Freakin Ecko, fashion Designer, grafitti artist, and purveyor of hip hop culture...

so the people who voted on this were
    -sports fans
    -people who had online access
-those familiar with Ecko and his business

completely non-biased, huh  yeah right

so the ball with an asterisk should have another asterisk that states:"Mark Ecko bought this ball and stamped this asterisk after an online poll conducted in September 2007 that had absolutely nothing to do with the MLB, its participants, or its decision makers having any say on the matter"
