im sure you didnt watch a single game of the second half of the rockets season, because if i remember correctly LUIS SCOLA was starting. chuck's minutes were relegated behind luis AND carl's.

Steals and blocks are a horrible indicator of a player's defensive ability. Come on.

Chuck Hayes is just another Othella Harington or Kenny Thomas with less offense. To say he is top 20 anything is ludicrous.

chuck is an elite defender. Remember how much trouble he gave boozer. Refuses to give up ground, low center of gravity, moves his feet.

and you better not show him the damn ball on your low post move, or it's gone. 7 out of 10 times, it's a clean steal. he gets away with the reach/swipe based on skill and reputation.

i guarantee you that if you ask otherlow post players, they'll say that Chuck is a pain in the ass.

he's no starter, but he has value and a role in this league as a stopper and change of pace defender.

To play good defense you've gotta be able to get on the floor first. That right there precludes Hayes from being a top-20 defender.

It's like saying Steve Novak (or JJ Redick for that matter) is a top-20 shooter in the NBA; if he is a sieve on the defensive it end it doesn't matter how many shots he can make. As I recall someone saying before, no one has range that extends past the out-of-bounds line, which is where these guys will always be.

In the same light, the rules don't allow Hayes to play defense from the bench. So he's not a top 20 defender. He's a defensive specialist who comes in when we need stops, and that kind of player is much more expendable.

The problem with Chuck Hayes is that the one skill he doesn't have is The most important basketball skill a player can have....SCORING.

A player with no offensive game just can't be a 30+ minute player... unless he has ungodly scoring talent around ala Ben Wallace in his Pistons days. On an already scoring-deficient team like the Rockets, starting Hayes is a luxury we can't afford.

Basically, the only way for Hayes to be great on the Rockets is if we get Artest for the 3, and trade for a near-allstar caliber PG.

IMO, he's the number one in freethrow routine.
    Desmond Mason isnt even close.

I agree that Chuck is low-rated by many here, and that often includes me. It's hard not to get ticked off at the guy when he doesn't finish a basket because he can't dunk, or when he gets to the line and tries that awful shot of his, and I'm leaving out other shortcomings. But who cares? The guy can ball. He's smart as a whip. Chuck never takes a minute off when he's on the court. Aside from Battier, is there another Rockets player who plays defense as hard as Hayes does?

For what we pay him, Chuck is an absolute steal. I hope we can find a way to keep him. I'm sure other teams have noticed his tough, consistent defense and bargain contract, so he may end up caught in a numbers game. Too many players and not enough spots, so he gets tossed into a deal to close it. I hope not. Dorsey could learn a hell of a lot from the Chuckster.

That is great, I am sure Tom would have started Chuck over Garnett....

That's because Chuck Hayes consistently (and at a high rate too) strips the balls from their hands before they put up a shot. He stops more shots than way than most people can block shots in one day.

Hayes is a great, as in GREAT, defender. You can knock his offense, free throws and being undersized, but his defense is outstanding and his low post strength is undeniable.

    Also a good, quality post.

Chuck's weaknesses (no offense, undersized) will determine his fate in this league no matter how good his defense is.

    Too bad for him.

So there's this guy named Dennis Rodman. I hear he was okay at defense. Something about 2-time DPOY or something.

I also hear he was a 6'7" power forward who averaged 0.6 blocks in 32 MPG for his career.

    i love chuck...

However, you would think the guy would work on his offensive game a little bit. I haven't seen even a little bit improvement. It makes me mad when he misses layups....His defense is undeniable though.

Chuck is a keeper in my book despite his offensive deficiencies.

    agreed. Chuck is a keeper.

Defense is seriously undervalued by the average fan. Sometimes it feels like people on the board expect every player to average 15+ points a game...or be gerald green.

    Disagree.

JVG said it best. Let's say novak is in the game. Let's say there are ten offensive possessions. If we're lucky, we can get Novak to shoot the three ball twice, and then at 50% (league leading), he contributes one three pointer every ten possessions, and 8 possessions he spreads the floor. But for the corresponding 10 defensive possesions, the other guy (Boozer, Kirilenko, heck even Ashton owned him) will post him up 10 times, and probably score 8 times. And Novak can't rebound for his life. Novak's plus/minus: crappy.

Now let's do Hayes. Every 10 posessions, he gets two layup attempts (pass from McGrady), and blows one (tee hee). The other 8 possessions, he may not spread the floor, but he's in prime position to get an offensive rebound. And then on Defense, Hayes does the best job of anyone in the league at defending monster PFs. He's patented the slap as guys take it on the way up. And, unlike Novak, will not give up offensive rebounds. Hayes plus/minus: pretty decent.

Yes, Hayes is undersized, and has crappy free throws, and blows layups. But he is extremely productive on the floor. And isn't that the bottom line? Production?

It's not about the tools, its what you can do with them. Stromile Swift is equipped with greater height, greater vertical, greater wingspan, better dunks, but Hayes with less tools is the better defender and rebounder. Plus, he's 4 million dollars cheaper.
