Agreed... tights can be better than compression sleeves in certain situations. The players aren't wearing them for looks... this ruling is really r****ded.
If this happened, it would change defensive strategies (I would only want to play in a zone... no close up man-to-man) and the whole box out/rebound thing. Also, I don't think I would watch much NBA. WNBA might be worth a little more time.
QUESTION: At what point does this not become a valid argument? Since they are 'paid handsomely' does this mean the NBA can make up any rule and force them to do anything? That the NBA OWNs them? Rocket RIver
Stern and Stu are worried that the league might turn into a group of sissies that climb brokeback mountain on a daily basis.
As long as the NBA is signing their checks they can make as many stupid rules as they want. If the player feel strongly enough about a rule they can stop playing in the NBA. Players have a choice, play by the rules, go on strike and sop getting paid, or get another job. And for the record I think this rule is dumb. The tights do look stupid but they help with injuries, the NBA should be happy since the tights will at least contribute a little to their superstars staying healthy.
Andrew Clark: You don't have any goals. John Bender: Oh but I do. Andrew Clark: Yeah? John Bender: I wanna be just like you. I figure all I need, is a lobotomy and some tights. Brian Johnson: You wear tights? Andrew Clark: No I don't wear tights. I wear the required uniform. Brian Johnson: Tights. Andrew Clark: Shut up.
I do suppose the Union can file a grievance of some sort? If the players decided to go on strike over this - I'm sure Stern would back down. Was the "business casual" stuff part of the CBA? If so - it would seem than dress codes are part of the labor agreement and that this sort of mandate may be a breach of contract? I'm not a lawyer and but I met Erik Estrada in Chinatown once.
Stern & Co. are going overboard. There's no check and balance system within the NBA, there needs to be.
Well, they already did make them bunch of sissies with all the rules changes and rewarding floppers. Don't you see 6'8 230 lbs guys flying around, rolling over on the floor, and crying for help, even if you just breathe in their directions?
Well prior to the Jordan era, players were running around in shorts that rode thisclose to the groin area. I can tolerate the tights. The nvt-huggers I can do without.
There needs to be a regime change in the NBA. NFL is also looking into curbing TD celebrations as well. Leave it up to some old stiff corporate types to take all the fun out of sports.
completely agree JV not sure about in the US but these things are big here downunder couple of companies (Skins and Linebreak) make em and have pretty good scientific evidence about the assistance they provide particular around blood flow, injury prevention and assisting recovery.... perhaps the league should spend it's time working out a better schedule that isn't so crammed and causing players so much physical pain
