This might be a noob question, but do I have to buy 2k14 to have updated rosters? Or is there an option where, if I buy 2k13, I can dl new rosters, reflecting real life?
Someone's bound to post them, but to get official, 2k rosters you'd need 2k14 (or else no one would buy it). Probably won't get this, primarily because I'll have a let less free time to play video games. I'll just get 2k15. As for the soundtrack, yeah it sucks. Yeah it has nothing to do with basketball. But you can upload your own music.
Definitely fun, but way too many problems/inconveniences to really be awesome like it could be. Hopefully they fix some things in 2K14, but I'm pretty skeptical.

Thinking about picking this up. I haven't played NBA 2k in a while so I don't know what most of the things included in the preorder pack are. Worth it?
I'm getting tired of people posting about how 2K14 current gen looks exactly the same as 2K13. How do they expect the current gen graphics to be any better if next gen consoles are coming out this year?
Looking at the feature list...what exactly is changing this year? I get they are adding crew mode back but...I don't give a **** about that. I really hope they are adding more to franchise (a owner mode would be cool) and myplayer mode. My player mode has always been my favorite mode.
Depends on the devs. Konami is using a new engine to power PES 2014, which is for current-gen only (even though the engine supports next-gen platforms). It seems like a really nice upgrade (PS3/360 version looks almost as good, or even better, than FIFA on PS4/XBO), and they could use a lot of that work to take advantage of next-gen consoles too. I don't really expect that from 2K, or some of these other devs though. They're pretty "lazy" when it comes to stuff like that. They generally seem to take a huge(ish) leap with next-gen, then they just make small tweaks/improvements (or steps back) every year after that.
I think it's hard to call them lazy. Sports games are a different animal since they are on such tight time constraints. I wish someone would make a bold move and decide to release these things when they are ready and instead release rosters every year until the next iteration of the game. They are able to throw in big features every 2-3 years but are mostly about tweaks. So while 2k did not have huge graphical leaps from game to game they did add a lot to the game over the years. Same for Madden, they did add that new physics system to the core of the game and redid their franchise mode into something else entirely. Same for Fifa...it's just sometimes they have down years where not much is offered. But the schedule for these devs to throw big stuff in there every year is a lot to ask...and then for it to not be buggy at the same time...These games are always riddled with bugs you wonder how they are even in the game.
Yeah, that's why I put "lazy" in quotes. Even "lazy" devs likely put in a ton of work. Inefficient/misguided might be more appropriate. I understand all that, though that's why I mentioned PES 2014 as a counter example. It faces the same problems, yet they were able to put together a pretty massive upgrade with the latest version (partly due to the move to the new "next-gen" engine). I think these teams could do a little better by being smarter with their development, their game engines, etc. But it is easier/safer to just do it once and leverage it for the next 7 years or so (instead of transitioning to a new engine 4-5 years in).
